Almost P/Ex'd the CTR.

Well after a few weeks of looking around, the wife and I decided we would go for a change of motor and lose the CTR, based mainly on the following factors :

1. She's not comfortable driving it.
2. It will not go into my garage backwards (something I have always done) due to camber/pavement etc.
3. I have two lads, one 14, one 16, plus a girlfriend (his...not mine).
4. No aircon, plus no rear opening windows, not looking forward to summer because kids will moan like hell.
5. Stupidly high insurance (almost £700 with £500 voluntary excess, totally clean licence...and yes I have looked EVERYWHERE! I blame Birmingham postcode)

So we looked around and decided on a Citroen C4 Picasso, in particular the 2.0i Exclusive variant, loads of toys on it, either petrol or diesel. These retail at £19,645 and £21,495 respectively. The 1st year depreciation is ridiculous, so we looked at 2007 Citroen approved ones. Imagine my delight when I eventually came across a dealer who had just taken delivery of 12 of the petrol models, all the Exclusive range. The best bit is he is doing them for £13,250 as an internet special, compared to £13,999 screen prices and they all have between 7-15 miles on them, the price drop is due to them being pre-registered by Citroen on November 30th 2007.
So off we set for Citroen Coventry, take the test drive, the EGS (semi auto) box takes a little getting used to but hey, £20k worth of car for £13K ? a no brainer to be honest. So you can imagine the look on our faces when he offered me the grand sum of £11,500 for my immaculate Silver CTR, with below average mileage, I saw the figure on screen and thought at first he had just put in a generic figure to get the ball rolling, but no, the best he eventually offered me was £11,800 but the Citroen went up to the screen price of £13,999 ! He even dismissed the fact that I was offered between £13,000 and £14,000 at my local Citroen dealer, against the same vehicle...if only they had one. Now I see the papers and news everyday and yes I know money is tight all over but this dealer was seriously under pricing the CTR and not going to budge, hell I even got £10,800 on my 3 year old Honda Fr-V 2.0 Sport when I traded it in for my CTR.

So bottom line is the wife will continue to drive her dad's Suzuki wagon R and we will be keeping the CTR, which to be honest I am glad of because it was mainly the fact that she does not like driving it that finally tipped the scales into the possible sale of it.

Overall a bit disappointed cos I liked all the extras that come with the Citroen as standard, but exceptionally happy that I still have my 200 horses under my right boot.

I think you paid off the salesman to do that so you wouldn't have to sell it

Would have been a bit of a change eh !

What about selling the CTR privately ?

I have been there, when "Er indoors" decided that she liked the top of the range C4 coupe (The one with the conservatory bolted on the back).
This continual discounting by Citroen via the dealers, is bringing them even more down market.
No good discounting, if they give b-gger all for your trade in.

Have you looked at the retained value at 3 years? Citroen 37% Honda 53%....don't even look at the 0-60 figure comparison!

Swap to a different car, but stick with Honda and go for a Civic EX 5 door. That has all the goodies you will want (you may want to add reverse sensors/camera though).

Sorry, can't help with the garage problem unless the standard 5 door has a slightly higher rear-end to cope with the slope.

PS: If you like the equivalent of driving a van I guess the Picasso would do!

I agree with "allan40alt" ...

Got kids \ intend to use the back seats often ? ... get the 5 door EX version ...

p.s. - remember that the 2.2 diesel can be 'tweaked' to circa. 200 bhp ! ...

If that's the price CTRs are going for these days I'm off down to the Honda garage!!
Sounds like a riduclous price to me, on the upside at least you now get to keep it for a while

That seems to be normal when you go to one of these dealers offering heavily discounted cars, they always want your car at a heavily discounted price too.

i would not go for a citroen, yes they are cheap, but his is reflected when you come to sell. the spanner monkeys aint got a clue how to fix them and customer care is very poor. i moved to honda after a 14year stay with citroen and my picasso was the worst one i had and it was brand new, total rubbish. go with allans idea an get a 5 door diesel, all the toys and you will still be smiling, and not the green house on wheels!!

I have been trying to part ex my 07 CTR GT Sat-Nav with nearly 33,000 miles on it and the most I have been offered is £12,000 against a 54 350z. Glasses, Parkers and What Car all say about the same too. I know you take a bit hit in the first year but nearly £8000 is a lot to stomach (and I have a big stomach!).

Bloody credit crunch.

So I think I will get the bonnet re-sprayed and keep it for another year.

I'd steer well clear of the French! I've been driving a 407 ex for the last 4 years - great car with all the toys - some that the civic ex doesn't come with and I'll probably miss (built in sunblinds in the doors and it's even double glazed!), but after it's first MOT last year, everything started to fall off! Thankfully it's a company car - I'd be seriously p****d off it it had been my own.

Everyone has bad tales to tell about every manufacturer, but Citroen, Peugeot and Renualt have all dissappointed me with their build quality. I've always loved my TD engine, but it's a snail compared to the Honda unit.

Get yourself a EX civic (they've got rear sensors as standard now), and the diesel engine is great - not a CTR, but better than a 2.0 Citroen (and more economical).

Trading a car in after a year gives salesmen a stiffy, they are going to cream you every which way, I was evaluating trading mine in for a 120d m sport , best value I could get on my car was 13k, but at least the dealer was knocking a fair chunk off the BMW

similar issue when I traded in my 18month old Golf GT against the CTR, got 10k for it.

it simply just isn't a good idea to trade a car so young unless its an exotic and theres a massive waiting list.

Due to its ever growing popularity new CTR prices will fall into predicted values in a year from now I reckon, best to suffer a bit longer

p.s. as you see in my sig, I didn't trade the ctr but got an 04 plated with 23k for 7.5k, do you really need such a new car ?

To be fair 33,000 miles on a CTR which is just over a year old and being offered £12,000 is pretty good going as thats 3 years worth of miles!

Agree with the others - get a diesel EX and have it chipped as Pottsy has done. Got room for 5 then and all the toys, including dual air con which I think is great - I'm always colder than mr lippy and it keeps us both happy - him colder and me hotter.

hlx,

What is the Glasses Guide trade in price for your car?

Vauxhall - Glass's Consumer Values

As others have said, a diesel EX is a good choice, and it goes well too.

I have Just checked my car which is a 57 plate - see below. There is a big difference between Excellent and below average condition!

The dealer offering hlxbravo only £11,500 is taking the **** even if it was the very earliest 56 plate.

You are better off selling privately if you can be bothered with the hassle. There should be plenty of buyers out there looking for a car in excellent condition with 2 years Honda warranty left.

If you had sold the R for a Citroen, you would have had regrets.
Particularly when a type R went past.
