What is your car worth?

Many people try to check the trade in price of their old car using a guide such as Parkers. This is horribly inaccurate - what is really needed is the Glasses Guide trade in value - the same value the dealers use...

Just used this and I am now off to find the nearest bridge to throw myself off

Only joking, it's not too bad actually. It'll be great for those looking to swap their cars to be armed with the same information as the dealer.

Interesting, I got the price for my 1.8 Type S GT then put in the same details but changed the car to a 2.2 and the 2.2 was only worth £50 more

Only £500 difference here. Looks like with the way fuel prices have gone, it's not only economical diesels that are selling, but also economical modern petrols.

I'll tell you what my 'old' 56 plate Sport was - Glasses at the time said £12000. Joke!! when I part ex'd in April I got offered £11000 by 2 different dealerships and neither would budge. Car was in good condition and was 20 months old and had done 8300 miles. So whatever the 'book' says you have to fight hard for anything near it!

Noted that for a car under two years old it must have no stone chips to qualify for "excellent" condition. Mine was disqualified after the first week.

I am Reasonably happy with the valuation for excellent condition, but no way am I selling !! £18,100 less £15,600 = £2500 depreciation in 9 months. First year depreciation is always the worst.

It just shows the importance of looking after your car (an extra £3050 depreciation - ouch)

Anyone worked out what the difference between the various diesels is? Prices dont seem to vary too much. Mine came in at about 11k for excellent condition (which it would be if my mates would take a bit more bloody care!) but it's got about 3k of extras over the normal spec (obviously i'll have lost money on them but it should still be worth a bit more)

whats the second word in the title of Parkers, Glass's and CAP's publications???

'Guide' and thats exactly what it is. Parkers isnt worth the paper its printed on and by the time Glass's and Cap are published and especially later on in a month, they are only useful as exactly that, a guide.

They give a realistic value of what the car has depreciated by from the previous month and a value from which to start an accurate valuation subject to recon costs etc. From a dealers point of view sometimes they can be bang on, other times way out. At this moment in time, anything that starts with the initials BMW is at least £1,000 behind its current book value, if it has an X in the model description, remove another £500 on top.

gone

My son in law has just sold my old 06 es diesel with under 20,000 miles and only got £8,500

Still not too bad for him he only lost £3,500 pounds in a year

I lost nearly £7,000 in a year

Not one Honda Dealer would even give him a price too much stock they said

more likely they had there fair share of civics

Gives me a ballpark figure though that is slightly actually higher than Parkers is quoting.

Just had a look, not that bad really. What I was expecting but I have no intention of selling my car. Could be worse, could be flyguy40, sold his Type R GT after 2 months with 1300 miles on it. Dealer stuck it up for sale for £17998 and he got back a lot less than that after paying £18900 in March this year! Eeek!!!!

I got offered £13,250 trade in for my 57 plate Type-R. When I laughed and had a look at car prices on the net I could see the second has ones in the dealers forcourt were going for about 14,500 which mad me sad!

Also garages don't care that you payed £950 more for rage alloys they value them the same!!

Thats always been the way.

When I had my Mini, I was offered less than half the value of the car at the time and promptly told by two dealers that they would put the car up for sale for more than twice what they would give me and sell it no probs (so why would a I want to sell it to them?) Also one garage was a Mini dealer and had the same year and model on the forcourt with more miles and no extras and wanted more than double so I just walked away and sold it a few years later for 4K less that I paid for it the 6 years before I will never ever see a return on a car like that ever again

Yeah I hope this credit crunch thing hits the gready ******** hard big time. Britains motorist is ripped off enough and I hope someday the dealers really have a taste of there own medicine.

u05rdh,

The second hand market value is not set by the dealer, but by you - the buying public. If you, as a buyer, will only pay new price less £3,000 for a one year old car, then the best a dealer can offer for that car is new price less £4,200 or so. There has to be a difference between his buying and selling price, because that's what pays for his people, premises and finance (there's a lot of cars sitting there and someone has to own them).

If you don't like the convenience and legal reassurance of buying from a dealer, you can bypass the whole thing and buy privately. If you don't like the offer that is made to you, then sell privately. There is no obligation, like there is with motoring taxes.

Yip true. Just hate paying that premiem for what kind of service? Dealers make enough money out of service and repairs that would pay for the whole showroom.

Been inti a few local dealers up here and they don't even know what there selling. Honda up here was not too bad they knew there stuff but the ford dealer just read from the broucher.

The 'credit crunch' is being felt by everyone all over. One of the boys on Type R Scotland has lost his job at the Honda dealer he worked at due to folk not buying cars.....if folk don't buy them then we don't get much back from the dealers
