Replacing rear discs and pads (£285!!)

Hi there

My car has just completed it's 37,500 mile service (actually only on 33,500) but was told that I need to have the rear discs and pads replaced at a cost of £285!!

I went to a Honda dealership as I wanted the car to be serviced at a dealership before the warranty ran out but have been quoted £150 for this to be done at my local garage. The parts however are not genuine Honda parts but "Blueprint" parts which are described "as good as genuine"

Will these parts void a warranty? I know that they are consumables so I don't think so but I can't believe Honda can charge so much for such an easy job!

Wouldn't worry about the warranty, save yourself the cash and get the cheaper ones. As long as the parts are the same why pay more.

Garages love it when you pay more especially when they try to wriggle out of doing something on warranty anyway.

Your warranty will still be valid if you have it serviced at a non-Honda garage if they use genuine Honda parts OR parts of equal or better quality to genuine Honda ones, and the garage has to be VAT registered.

How much warranty have you got remaining on the car?

I can understand the pads needing replacing but why the discs as well ?

Are they not manufactured to last anymore ?

Rear discs need replaced because the pads were so worn they are scoring into them

Going to get some ebc discs and pads and get my local garage to them.

When I told Honda that they dropped the price of their quote to £210, they also told me the cost of the parts were £125. So originally they were looking for £160 for fitting!!!

How many miles did that take to wear them away completely ?

and were the pad levels noted and reported at the last service ?

I'm afraid that this is the first service I have completed on the car since I have owned it, it was serviced by a Honda garage before that but there was no indication of excessive brake wear. The car is at 34000 miles.

Ah

I often wonder about these "we'll have it serviced before you collect it sir" promises.

I bet it probably wasn't touched and you have now suffered. I've had these promises before and when you check the oil before driving off it's still the old dark brown stuff instead of golden brown new oil.

Yeah, still shocked at the price of what Honda were looking to charge though. That for an hour and a halfs work is shocking!

If you can get the parts for £125, how much will your local garage charge to fit them?

If £160 is 4 1/2 hours work, thats pretty cheap per hour by garage standards I think. Not sure what mine charged, but my guess if that £55 an hour might be nearer the mark?
Franchised garage labour is very expensive for all makes, and I don't think Honda are at the cheaper end either.

Sorry my mistake - misread post. I thought it said 'four and a half hours' for some reason - one of those senior moments I think! Agreed - £107 is very expensive. My recollection is that I was charged £55 an hour, but I may have got that wrong too.

£55 / hr is really good. I'm sure mine is around the £70 mark.

Also if it was taking any garage 4.5 hrs to change brake discs, you have to question their ability!!!!

Agreed - but reading the posts about dealers on this forum, you might be right to do so

Ok just to let you know.

I have bought ebc rear discs and pads for £68 off the net and will have my local garage perform the work, (they said no more than £50)

So local garage + parts: £118
Honda Dealer: £285

I don't want to rubbish the dealers because i'm sure they do good work but you can't argue with the numbers.

That's quite a bit cheaper!

You can spend the difference on something more fun now!
