Same thing I am really glad I started driving on my good old Peugeot 106 (1.0 XD). Made me build my experience as a driver.
But I do find insurrance expensive in the UK. When I bought my RX8 (3 years ago I was 24 with 10% bonus) the insurrance costed me a bit less than 1800 euros per year ...

Same with me, i started out when i was 17 with my trusty 1995 1.2 clio, then i had a 'proper' 1.0 mini, then a citreon 1.4 AX-GT then to a smart car and now to the type-r.

A bit up and down i know but this all helped me to earn, i suppose 'respect', with insurance companies as i have been on their various systems for 5 years now with my own policies.

Oh BTW i have the number plate C4 XGT (which came off the AX-GT) for sale if anyone is interested, or knows anyone that would be need the money now coz march will be an expensive month!! lol

Yep thats the way I started too.

At 17 in a crappy Mk2 Escort that cost £200. The insurance was £300 odd. Had 3 similar bangers and then moved up to 4 year old cars, got a nice healthy NCB. Then lucky enough to have 3 company cars in a row and came out of the scheme just before I would have lost my NCB by not having my own policy for 3+ years.

It really makes you appreciate how hard you worked for you NCB when you are 100% responsible for your actions and not insuring as a named driver.

Is it Hating day today?

Its got nothing to do with anyone on how Im insured the car, like what another member has said.

I posted the Type R post on behalf of my Dad, he's the one paying, and he would go with the 19's and GT pack.

On modding the 1.4, there was no performance upgrades, part from the exhaust. The sound system didnt needed to be declared, we told out insurance, they said its ok, the wheels, we declared, only put on a little big on the insurance.

This is a forum showing each other your civic's, not a bloody insurance forum!

If your insured that's all it matters,

Whats next? how did you afford to by the cars? its got nothing to do with you..

Call it a break....

Civ Pilot, you need to clear your facts before you say anything really...
Do you even know me? All cars is used by eveyone, but I only use the CLK now when its free.. So technically im not 'Fronting' as you put it.

All I can say, go out and drive your civic, and have a nice day, instead of hating young drivers.

Some posts split from another thread into this one.

Please keep any discussion logical, calm, polite, non-confrontational and balanced, or else I'll bung the whole thread into the bin!

Have you considered a multicar quote? You can say (legitimately) how much people WILL use each cars and you get a discount on separate policies?

some insurance companies allow named drivers to build up NCD......

I am named driver on my wife's car, not having my own car just a ninja 9, so i drive the car as much as she does, does that make me a front? we informed said insurance company who said it is fine.... so shop around i suppose....

I haven't owned my own car in about 4-5 years now, and so my NCD is gone, I dread the day I need to get one again, but saying that, we are switching countries hopefully soon so we both start on a clean slate so to speak.

I notice this thread's quite old, and things might have changed, but Danko seems to have had a real hiding in this thread, I'd call it bullying, but there you go. At the end of the day, the "main driver" stuff is a bit of a misnomer, I've contacted insurers from time to time on all manner of enquiries and the bottom line is that the one's I've spoken to are not that bothered really. For a couple of reasons. 1) if the lad doesn't say he's the main driver and he has a bump, they may not pay out, but they can still keep collecting steep premiums, and 2) Dad could use it once a month and completely wreck it because he's not as used to it as son is so does it matter who's driving it?

It will only matter when someone has to be scraped off the road and dad finds that there's no payout, then who's the loser?

I'd say leave the lad alone, and might even suggest that some are jealous of the fact that he's a young lad with a nice car because daddy paid for it. That's just his good luck. Life's tough, but you have to get on with it.

potentially the family of 4 who were in the oncoming car, which is now a family of 2 orphens, both of whom have been crippled for life and will need hundreds of thousands of pounds of medical attention and care.

The insurance company then has a choice - pay out, or look for a loophole which means that they don't have to.

Which isn't a dig at Danko in particular, just my feelings on un-insured drivers in general.
And I'm not saying Danko is un-insured either - but there is / was potentially 'wriggle room' that the ins co would jump on if they needed to.
And, while on the subject, not suggesting for a moment that Danko's driving is of a standard where he is likely to hit a family of 4.

However, this thread has laid dormant for about 3 months now, and I'm not entirely sure that there is much more to be said really.

I don't know if this point has been made but even if you buy the car new, yoiu must mention any optional extras, ANY. I mentioned everything on mine and the insurance stayed the same but even things like the interior lights, metal pedals etc. still affect the car, as it is more appetizing to thieves etc etc. so the tinyest change to a nut, is enough to affect your insurance. Believe me I know, the hard way .

Nicley done though, even though I'm not a fan of modified cars, but your is subtle enough not to look boy-racerish.

BTW, on the plate bit, I informed my company of mine, and told them the plate was being held by my father on the car, although my plate was my second name only. They seemed fine as long as I told them.

i'm also glad i started building up my NCB from when i first passsed my test! started out in a 106, and now at 24 i've got 5 years NCB due to taking pass plus! it is a bit scary that 18 year olds with no common sense or driving experiance are insuring powerful cars.

i heard of a wealthy family that bought their young son a lotus elise and within a month he'd killed himself showing off to a friend!

so powerful cars cost a lot to insure for a vary good reason! and parents that think they are helping their kids out by insuring the cars for them might learn the hard way, that its not helping them!
