Question Can I have your thoughts please?

I've been offered some extra's with my car, if possible can I have your thoughts please?

Gap Insurance (I know there is another thread on this, but I thought I would include it) - £350

Tyre Cover (considering I have 18" Storms should I get it?) - £150 for 3 years

Key cover (replacement keys and locks changed if keys stolen) - £99 for 3 years

Any help would be great - you guy's have been great so far with the advice, so can I have your thoughts?

Many thanks

I really wanted the gap insurance as I think it is peace of mind for three years esp if you can not afford to replace the car!! However, you have 4 weeks to take the Policy out and as both my cars have had problems I didn't buy it, which is just as well as the policy would not have been transferable to my new car!!

Personally I wouldnt bother. if you have the cash to pay for them, then stick it somewhere safe and use it if you need to replace a tyre, or a key.

GAP insurance is available online for half that price, for better cover.

Agree with BG. I think you have to draw a line somewhere regarding insurance, if you can cover the cost yourself, then why insure?. GAP insurance may be worthwhile if you are paying for the car with a loan or similar.
Of course, if you are unfortunately one of the people to whom all these bad things happen, then please ignore the above.

Click4gap are meant to be okay.

Some of the GAP insurance is a bit weird - if you have a three year old car, and you write it off, then surely you could only reasonably expect to get something of that age as a replacement, not a brand new car.

If the car is a write off they pay the full cost of invoice price.

The point of GAP insurance is that if you write the car off within three years, your insurance will pay you what the car is currently worth and the short fall to the value of a new car is paid by the GAP insurance policy, I think it is really worth having.

Yes, but if the worst happened, I would be quite happy with a car of the same spec and age as mine, ie one at the current market value.

I can't understand GAP insurance.
I always thought that comprehensive insurance should pay you enough to replace a written off car with something similar, ie the same make, model, mileage etc.
So if on day 1 the car is written off I would expect a new replacement, if it happens after 6 months/6k miles I would expect to be able to get a 6 month old car with 6k miles and so on.
I have often wondered why car insurance companies don't just buy the replacement car and give it to you (something that happens with some home appliance insurances, the insurance company buys at a discount, you get a similar appliance).

On a related note, I have seen ( http://www.honda.co.uk/car/finance/gapInsurance.html ) that the GAP insurance doesn't cover dealer fit accessories, I suppose you have to ask the dealer to list what is and what isn't covered.

I personally would be gutted if I wrote mine off after a couple of years, car insurance companies are well known for paying out as little as possible and to find a car of equal spec when you have had extras put on could prove difficult especially for someone like me who does low mileage.

My own insurance will replace my car for a brand new one if it is written off within the first 12 months not sure if that is standard.

Then again I take out insurance for almost everything (I would insure my insurance if I could)!!!!! Over the years I have saved loads more money through insurance then I have paid out

I thought the gap insurance offered by Honda was expensive, so I went to click4gap for a quote and was hardly surprised when theirs was much cheaper for similar cover. I took this price to Honda and, though they wouldn't reduce theirs, they did give me a voucher for a free service.

I didn't bother with the tyre insurance as, having never had to replace a tyre on a car, I didn't fancy parting with £100 on the off chance I might over the next three years. I don't recall key cover even being mentioned.

I went with click4gap, who originally quoted me £200 for insuring my almost 20 grand car. When I actually bought it, they only charged me £145. I thought that was really good for 3 years new-for-old top-up, (doesn't cover dealer-fit accessories, though). The 'phone call was 5 minutes, and the paperwork came through in two days. Very efficient.

I also went for the spare wheel option. May sound off-topic, but you mentioned tyre insurance and I look on it as tyre and aggro insurance. If you get a puncture without one, and have to use that goo stuff, you knacker a tyre that might be repairable and you goo up the wheel so no-one will want to touch it until you've cleaned it up; all very inconvenient, not to mention the comparative roadside inconvenience. You only need one puncture and the thing's pretty much paid for; if you never get a puncture, you just sell it on as new when you change the car - there'll be plenty of takers.

As for key insurance, I didn't even know this was available, but £99 seems a bit excessive. How much more than that can a key be? Alright, knowing Honda, probably a lot more, but certainly not enough to warrant that insurance price. I think I'll live dangerously and take the risk on that one.

To me, insurance is more about peace-of-mind, not just rational, cost-effective risk analysis; I feel that gap insurance gives me this, yet I've never written a car off or had one stolen in over 35 years of driving.
I have the spare wheel, yet I've not had a puncture in 15 years.
But, as pcr says, 'you have to draw the line somewhere' and I draw it way before key insurance, but you may not. As Topcat says, he's insured up to the hilt because he feels the need, and he's been lucky enough, (or should that be unlucky enough), that it's paid off.

Hi Moo - one thing you don't mention is Honda Happiness. If your civ is a 1.8 (even if it is a 2.2, still ask for it) I would recommend it. Read about it here Honda Happiness 5 Year svs plan

I was also looking @ the gap insureace because i got conned when i lost one of my prevoius car but 300 i thought was to dear , key cover i already have but if your car insucance is up for renewal soon contact insure.co.uk
On a car less than 2 year old i think it was u get old of new cover inculuded and key cover for £12 , that proect your other keys too.
Back to the car cover if you insure your car i.e today and anytime in the next year your car is written off you will get a new car not the market value and in the second year u get a 1 year old car not a two year old car was about £20 extra i think, and they were cheapist out of 60-70 compaines i had tryed so i got both for free £32 cost for hondas £150ish
I had tyre inscance on the 307 and they still chareged me good half the price of replacments and tryes under 4mm i think it was u dont get anything or i didnt so be careful.

Thumbs up Gap Insurance...

Hello all,
Jan here, I am one of the Directors of www.Click4Gap.co.uk and just picked up on your thread regarding gap insurance.

Our site offers the 3 types of Gap Insurance cover – Finance Gap, Return to Invoice and Vehicle replacement. The following link http://www.click4gap.co.uk/productsRTI.asp may be most useful as over 90% find Return to Invoice Gap the most appropriate.

Our aim is to provide the best cover at the best price (up to 75% saving on dealer premiums). We’ve worked hard to keep the site simple and use plain English, but having provided Gap Insurance wholesale and retail for over 20 years we can be guilty of slipping into jargon on occasions. So, whilst we’ve lots of experience in Gap Insurance, we’re new to the whole online side of things, so your feedback would be much appreciated (be gentle though).

We can deal with any questions via email info@click4gap.co.uk , but if you prefer the human touch we’re based in Wimbledon, London and happy to take your call 020 8543 6014 (or request a call back http://www.click4gap.co.uk/contactus.asp)

To pre-empt two most frequently asked questions…

WHY ARE YOUR PREMIUMS SO LOW –
Easy, we’re online and don’t have the overheads or pay the commissions the dealer has to.

WHY YOUR PREMIUM IS SAFEAND CLAIMS HONOURED SWIFTLY
The insurer, Red Sands Insurance Company (Europe) Ltd., is the specialist in UK motor related insurance products.
· Member of The Association of British Insurers (A.B.I.)
· A voluntary member of the Financial Ombudsman Scheme
· European Regulated

· Your policy is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme
· Claims are handled by Click4gap (regulated by the Financial Services Authority), real people based in Wimbledon London.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I've just got off the phone to Jan over at Click4GAP. We're going to be working together to bring you some excellent GAP prices as well as giving something back to the site. They will be coming on stream as a site advertiser, and civinfo.com will get some commission from sales through this site

More developments soon.
