Self Servicing

Hi There,

My car has just slighlty gone over the 25k service and from looking at the list of areas covered in the schedule, this would be a doddle for myself as i have been maintaining/modifying cars for 10+ years although i do not work as a mechanic and do not like being ripped off for jobs i can quite easily do in my sleep.

I rang the guy at Honda and basically asked the question on whether i could buy all the parts from Honda and just do the work myself (a monkey could do it quite frankley). He said that this is fine to do (he realised i knew what i was on about)as Honda ephasise that the services should be carried out as and when they are set out in the schedule. The only real problem could arise if the car developed a problem later down the line and Honda ask for the service history of the vehicle. But honestly, if something were to seriously happen, i dont seee it been down to any of the items replaced on a 2nd service? And also, even if i took it to my local garage to have the work done (which Honda allows) they could still turn round and say that it hasnt been serviced at Honda and refuse any warrenty issues so i may aswell just do it myself right??

The other thing is, the clutch as just started to slip and i am wondering if they may be funny and ask about the 2nd service (though adjustment of this isnt mentioned in the schedule??)

What are your thoughts on what to do as i was going to do the service myself tomorrow!

I only want to keep the car until its 3 yrs old.

There are some servicing prices here you can get an idea of rough charges.

The other thing you could do to protect the warranty is to get a VAT registered non-franchised garage to service the car. Providing they use the correct parts and Honda's service schedule, you could save a bundle, and protect your warranty.

One of the conditions of your warranty is that you get it serviced at the relevant intervals and in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines.

To fulfill this condition you need to get it serviced at a Honda Dealer or alternatively, as Wheelie says, at a garage that is VAT registered and they need to use genuine Honda parts or parts of equal or better quality.

if the clutch is starting to slip I'd worry more about that than the servicing, seems to be coming a common problem and the main reason I got shut of mine.

My understanding is that the Warranty is OK as long as the parts used are of the same or better quality than Honda (so basically use Honda parts) and that it is carried out by a competant person, this is where you may have a problem as you are competant but the manufactures look for a VAT registered Co doing the work. This Doesn't mean they are any more competant than you but they WILL use it against you.

Coming back to the clutch, I'd get it in for service at a Honda dealer (and pay the going rate) and get them to investigate the clutch at the same time.

I agree.
Don't do it yourself, as Honda will wriggle through an eye of a needle if they can get away with it, with a warranty issue.
Nothing wrong with a decent non Honda garage doing the service though, but the billing needs to be fully itemised, to confirm that the correct or approved parts have been used.

I did consider the Honda servicing but the price put me off (especially just after Christmas and for what they do for it!) and the mileage is just under 27K, i had it in my head that the next service was due at 27.5k. (Because i had brake pads at 15k then added the 12.5k) I thought if i took it into Honda, they may try and use the fact that it has gone past the stated 25k mileage. Thats why if i didnt do it my self, a family friend who owns a garage was going to do the work with Gen parts and write the mileage down as being just past the 25k. It is going in next week for the Clutch issue, they said they may need it overnight.....

No it's 62,500 for your car but Mr JP has a Type R it's 25,000 on that.

Don't worry about being 1500 miles over the scheduled mileage.
This is my 4th Honda and I have never had any trouble with warranty issues after a Dealer service being a little past the date or mileage.

I think that if you do it yourself and something happens then you are walking into a Honda excuse for not honouring warranty. Getting it done professionally mean long term peace of mind!

I have had a look through all the doccumentation i recieved when i had the car and it makes no mention of taking it to a VAT registered garage, only to stick to the schedule and use Gen parts. I dont see how "VAT registered" anyhow can guarentee competancy, it should state in there that it should be serviced by someone who has recieved the correct training/holds the required certification to service the car.

I could take the car to a VAT registered company (you only need to be VAT registered if you make a monies in excess of the threshold) and it could be serviced by an apprentice with zero qualifications????

How many peolple who have their car serviced knows that the person carrying out these works is certified to do so.....??? Not Many!

When I used to own a car, I'd get my servicing done by word of mouth, as in picking someone known by their reputation.

Now my servicing is done by the main dealer.
