What discount should I expect ?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if some of you dealers could advise me on a quote I have received.

I'm looking to cash purchase a new Honda Civic i-ctdi standard EX model in Nighthawk Black Pearl with one option, Concert Pack upgrade. OTR is approx £19900 I think.

I have been offered a £1400 discount, which sounds pretty poor to me.

Can any of you guys give me a better price and if so, how much ?

pm me if you would prefer.

thanks,
Steve

I'm sure you could haggle a much much bigger discount than that, even without the credit crunch!

A year ago I would have called £1400 ok as it is 7%.

Today I would have pushed for more.

You'd save well over £4,000, brand new on DrivetheDeal.

Other firms of that kind would offer similar discounts.

Don't think about accepting the offer you've had.

Get some online quotes from companies such as DrivetheDeal for the exact same model and take them into the dealer to see how close they can get.

In the current climate I would be looking for a minimum discount of 15% and push for 20% to start with.

Personally I think that might me a little extreme. The key thing is to get the best deal for you.

Dealers want to sell cars at a small profit not donate them to the customer, mrh339 even in this economical climate!

The key is, don't buy new. If you want a MY09, wait a couple of months.

Anyone that buys new has got more money than sense IMO.

Guys Honda have got an airfield full of unsold cars and have had to cease production so do you not think that dealers will not have prices lowered and more margin to discount? If drive the deal can manage a discount of £4000 then a dealer should also be able to its just a case of finding them so shop around.

I guess it depends how badly you want a new car. I got a mint 57 plate ES for 9500, so if you're happy with that kind of depreciation on a new car then go for it. 1400 or 4000 discount you're still looking at a serious loss a short time from now if you go for a new one.

I dont need to think that, i KNOW that isnt the case. and no, there aren't any airfields full of unsold UK spec cars.

Telling me Dan. I have lost 3 deals this week due to lack of availaliblity on New 08 Civics. There are few 08's left now especially in SE spec.

Plus dealers wont transfer their stock just in case they have any enquiries.

Maybe you need to speak to Mrh339 - he seems to know where there are a stack of cheap new cars being stored.

I thought that dealers were now getting £3000 "support" on 2008 models, in addition to any usual margins, which might explain how brokers can offer £4k off.

My French Dealer offered me 10% on a 2008 1.8 EX Ishift 3 weeks ago, before I even open the mouth.
I have to manage to find time to go back to him to see the price now that we are in 2009...

The funny thing is that in Germany (Honda northern europe) you can order already 2009 models, and in France (Honda southern europe) you can't, it seems they have decided to sold all 2008 cars before starting the 2009 sells.

On the BBC tv 1pm news.
They had a few minutes worth of the new cars sales figures.
There was a Honda Dealer in Scotland, offering the Hybrid at £2000 off.

Just spend a bit of time and shop around and dont be affraid to walk away if you are not sure you are getting the best deal. If drive the deal are offering £4000 off new civics then that has to be the starting point for you.

Companies like DrivetheDeal only get their cars from main dealers. So clearly, some dealers take the gamble of supplying them in the hope of making a lot of sales they wouldn't have made before.

Obviously, they earn next to nothing on them.

But since this trade continues, the law of the market must mean they make enough.

Nevertheless, as so many others have said, just don't buy new.

There are cars cluttering the airfileds in Swindon. My nephew has just got a 6 months contract to move the cars to other storage areas
