Introduction - buying advice needed.

Hello I found this site from a link from the What Car website.

I am looking at getting a new Civic to replace my wifes Mini Cooper due to our expanding family.

My wife wanted A Golf or 1 series, which both offer poor value for money & look dull next to the Honda.

My Mother has owned 5 Hondas in the past (Preludes) & always thought they were the best cars she ever had, both in terms of drivng pleasure & reliability.

What I need to know is ...?

Is this a good buy....?

Civic 2.2 Diesel Sport, 55 plate 2006 , around 4600 miles.
Price from Springfield 15K.

What sort of discount could I get trading my 53 plate Mini Cooper in for ..?

Our alternative choices are a new Golf Match 1.6 petrol or a nearly new Seat Leon.

sorry, really can't answer that question, i'm not a uk resident, have no idea of residuals there. Just one tip, try to get a new one if your budget can stretch. the first series turned out to have a few faults which now in the new 2007 model have been eliminated.
if someone sold his so quickly, it is probably littereds with problems.

Guess you must support the best football team in europe by you user name, good choice.
Back on topic, traded my wifes Mini Cooper 04 plate in April 05, BMW offered £8500 for px on a new CooperS when they had 02's on the forecourt at £11000 so ending up doing the px at Renault on a 182 Clio and got £11000 plus discount on the new car.
I think there is a low mileage diesel EX in the for sale section which may be better value, as the car your looking at only has just over a grand off list price.
Sold my Megane private as the trade in Honda offered was very poor, £1500 under bottom book.
Hope this helps.

That p/x price on the Mini Cooper was an insult - Mini's supposedly have one of the best residual values of all - obviously only applicable to the BMW dealer's greedy selling price!

The saleswoman had the neck to offer £8000 first as well, i think now they are losing most of the used cars out of the franchise dealer network the artificiality high prices/ demand they managed to keep high for so long will begin to fall. And of course BMW like to make big bucks on each car twice,as you could not get a penny of list new either.

Feel much sympathy for all those BMW Mini dealers - 2007 is going to be such a hard year for them part exchanging the outgoing Mini for the new 'must have' version.
Perhaps we should start a collection bearing in mind their anticipated narrow profit margins?

The price looks about right, though this would be for a popular colour. I'd expect it to be £500 less for a less popular colour.

A 1.6 petrol Golf is a terrible car in comparison, I can't really compare the Leon as I don't know it that well. Normal that are compared to the Civ are the Golf TDi and the A3 - and we all prefer the Civ to those!

HTH,

Cheers Potsy - I forgot to say , the car is silver - looks nice.

I am very tempted, especially at this times of year as there is very little "foot traffic" at dealers at the moment, I should be able to haggle hard...!
