Just bought a used Civic, the HDS effect!

Hi

Been a member of this forum for a while now, but didn't have a Civic, what happened was I was looking for a car a few months ago at a local non Honda dealership which had a diesel civic sport for sale with 600 miles on the clock. Had a test drive and was well impressed but couldn't do a deal on the day. In the week later it sold (it was also in black so I guess that's why it went so quickly). I've been looking for another car ever since, and originally I was being sensible looking for a cheapish runaround for about £5k-£6k, but I found there was something holding me back! I think I'm gonna call it HDS, Honda Dash Syndrome ...every car I've looked at since seems so boring! Went to look at a 2004 Civic 1.4 with 7k on the clock last weekend, £6700, very sensible but just bring myself to commit to buy it! I must point out at this stage, the old style Civic was one of those with the better interiors! So...yesterday I bought a 06 Civic 1.8 SE with 10k on the clock in black from a non Honda Dealership (think I got a good deal, I don't do mega miles so couldn't justify the difference in price for the Diesel). Hopefully can get it next week. I'm currently just going through the stage of 'have I done the right thing...is it too much money...depreciation etc'...so all, I guess it's your job to tell me I've done the right thing!!!

I bought a new 1.8 SE in November 06. We traded in my wifes 1.4 sport jazz for it. Although there are some minor irritations with the car I still love it compared to the jazz. By the way the jazz was perfect! never when back to the dealer for any warranty work( built in Japan not Swindon).
Residual values are very good on the Civic, just make sure you have it serviced at a Honda dealership for warranty purposes.

Actually nearly bought a used Jazz a few weeks ago, 1.4S, but was quite impressed as it seemed quite nippy for the size of the engine. I know what you mean about the residual values, I've been waiting a while for them to come down in price. The depreciation index on WhatCar is totally wrong, 1 yr old 06 SE for £10,915? I don't think so! First time I've had a Honda, had a Nissan 100NX, Ford Puma, Audi TT and Mazda 3, so looking forward to it I think!

Actually the warranty is someting you should look into make sure the
non honda dealership hasn't done anything to the car service or other
as this may affect the cars warranty

Good choice in car but in my opinion brave ( I would never buy a used car
purely beacuse of the unknown history - for that reason I always buy new)

Non main dealers working on cars won't impact warranty - that's simply not legal anymore.

Your reasons for only buying new are flawed.... Paying half the price for a barely run in car in perfect condition isn't really a gamble these days. Only reason I'm going new this year is my work is footing the bill. If I decide to drop out the company car scheme the newest I'll generally go is about 2 years. Buying brand new is (and this is my opinion) a waste of good money.

You are right in part DougP
but if a dealer has used non Honda parts at all
then this can still invailidate the cars warranty!!!! ( This applies to all
manufacturers)

As far as buy a new car - everyone has their own opinion
but as I said before I will never buy a second hand car - you have no complete way of knowing how the car has been treated throughout its life
I am much happier knowing that I am the first owner - it makes it my car
and no one else's

but as I said everyone does their own thing

I hear what you're saying brodick, but if the cars being bought from a dealer (and even if its not) it has to go through a series of stringent checks to ensure quality and safety, any work needs done is done before you buy the car. second hand makes a lot of financial sense for some people, yes its nice to have a brand new car but in this age there is not really any sacrifice in quality or life expectancy from a used car. (maybe a few scratches and chips etc, but mostly superficial)

I would have no hesitation in buying a nearly new Civic. However my local dealership simply didn't have the spec I wanted . 1.8 SE fog lights, 17" sport alloys, nhb.
I know you loose money on the 1st year or so, but there is no better feeling getting into a brand new car.

I agree with the HDS effect. My kids were totally impressed. If you want to impress others, try this [HOW TO] Do dashboard self-diagnostic

Some folks have described the dash as "1980's Amstrad", but I reckon most people are happy with it, possibly with the exception that you have to be very careful not to scratch it.

Hi All

Thanks for all the replies. Would have loved to have bought new, but the overall cost was the big issue along with the dreaded depreciation! Would have loved to have got a 2.2 Diesel EX with Leather etc, but think that will have to wait! Badly needed a car as my partner and I are sharing a 1.0l Yaris at the moment. Not got anything bad to say about the car, but will be nice to get a car of my own again and something with a bit more poke!!!

pjelsworth - I'll try that trick when I get it!!!

Big question now is will it fit in my garage!?!

Just an update on the thread below, didn't end up getting the Civic after all. Had a go in the petrol and didn't think it matched up to my experiences in the Diesel, so gonna wait for one of those to crop up at a decent price used instead. Might have to get a Jazz or something to put me on!

Tell me about it, it's now seriously doing my head in! Doesn't help when you see quite a few Civic's driving around either (even the guy at the top of our street has a black 1.8!)

Watch this space...(but don't hold your breath!!!)
