I think the way it works is that the knob is only partially threaded tapered hole. So it will very gradually get tighter and tighter (and so a loose one is fine to tighten up). In fact, when I installed the new one, it was really really high. So I did what you do when tapping a thread and tightened it up, then slackened it off, then tightened it up (and so on), until it gradually made the thread and got lower down on the rod. Still a bit high, but useable now.

I think I'll buy it then. Did you get your standard gear knob to take with you?

Or had the knob just been replaced?

I fitted it myself, so have the standard one sitting on a shelf.

Nadz, there's no nut - you just grab the knob and unscrew the whole thing.

I bought an Alloy sports gear knob off ebay the other day. it came from Hong Kong but arrived in only 4 days!!! (good service). Its similar to the spoon gear knob I've posted a picture of high up this thread but without the heat colouring (its just machine finished Alloy, very light so the shift is much improved) Fitment on it is for the last model Civic/S2000/Integra and I can confirm that it fits the new car fine. Slightly lower than the standard gear knob.

I will post pictures and a link to the seller latter on today but can recommend the product. oh... and it only cost me £8 including the shipping.

But it also confirms for me that the old shape Titainium Civic Type-R gearknob will fit our car as the fitment size is obviously the same (like I said this gear knob I have bought was for the old car)

Pottsy - is this pic of the 'after' you lowered it, or 'before'?

I'm guessing 'after'?

Short of taking mine off, don't suppose you happened to notice if there was any more potential room for lowering it further (ie un-tapped space) - I'm thinking may one of those thread tapping thingies to get the thread right to the top if it's not already...

Mmmmm....

Not sure if i'm gonna go for the sports gear knob or not. I'm getting the automatic so the problem about changing gears shouldn't be too much of a problem for me, but £75

I spoke to my dealer nicely when ordering my Civic 2.2 -iCTDi EX about the sports gear knob due to the fact that the standard knob scratches easily. The out come is that I am getting the Sports Knob for free

In case anyone is interested, I enquired about the price of the Type R knob at the parts dept of my local dealer and its apparently £55, incl VAT. I noticed there are a few on e-bay and one just finished went to £32 (incl postage)

Seen a silver 2.2 ES in my village with a Type-R knob. I don't think us i-Shifters have the same problem

Bumping an old thread here (But promise its not a post whore Pottsy )

Decided to risk it and change up the sports shift knob bought from ebay to something more official. Looked at the old shape Type-R shift knob (£54.29 from dealers) and the S2000 version (£85.19) and decided on the S2000 as I've never seen a civic with one fitted (either old or new shape).

First thing I had to do was ask the dealer & Honda technical if the above listed would fit the gear shaft of the '06 model Civic. Neither of them could answer the question so I had to take the plunge myself.

As luck would have it I saw a second hand S6k shifter on ebay listed badly ("Honda-S 2000-Shift knob-Oryginal") with a starting bid of £4.99 plus the same for shipping. I put my maximum and forgot about it. On Saturday I won the auction for the grand total of £17.

And guess what.... it fits

Will post some "prelim" pictures here later to show the difference between S2000 and standard but currently in the process of restoring the alloy to a flat finish (its a bit shiney out of the box) and marking up patterns to make a leather gater just to finish things off.

fab result CivPilot!

I've almost gone down that route a couple of times now - fingers hovering over the 'bid now' button...

Is the S2000 a 6 speed, or just 5 like all the other TypeR knobs that seem to be on ebay?

And - most importantly, as it's the reason I'm considering it - can you give a rough idea of how much shorter it makes the gear stick overall (pretty please!)

The S2000 shift knob is marked 6speed and in the same layout as our car. Much heavier (seems to be solid alloy) and the leather is very soft. I does shorten the stick by a bit, looks shorter as the knob itself is more compact, but the main difference is the increased weight giving a nice presice shift action.
Seems strange, but the lighter shift knob I fitted earlier made the gear shift feel nicer. Yet fitting this S2000 knob which is far heavier has improved the action hugely..... strange as both shift knobs are either end of the spectrum in wieght.

I will take a couple of camera phone piccies later and post them here, a before and after shot if I get time.
