Overal opinions on Civic sought

Hello to any Civic owners online - I am considering buying a new 2007 model Civic 2.2 i-CTDi EX, so where better to get an honest view of what's good and what's not, about this car? I realise that most of you will be seriously pro the car as you've bought one (for better or worse for richer or poorer etc) - but some of you will be a little - or a lot - disappointed with your car. I would be grateful if initially only those with the model I am considering would give me feedback.
In particular I am interested in the following;
Fuel economy;
Servicing costs;
Ride & handling;
Long journey comfort and end of journey fatigue (or not?);
What you especially like about the car;
What you especially do not like about the car;
Optional extras worth having;
Problems/niggles you've experienced.

I would be most grateful for honest and forthright replies.
Thanks.

hello and welcome. i own the car your considering buying. i ll try to answer your questions as honesty as possible.
fuel economy is pretty good not as high as honda claim but i m getting 43 mpg on avg though i do a lot of driving (its a company car) so my driving is very mixed.
service costs dont apply to me so cant answer that
ride and handling are excellent
comfort is very good but it took me a while to get the seat set right to be really comfortable when i first got the car i found it very un comfortable
good things are ride handling the speed the gadgets.
fuel filler caps a problem for me but i ve got my technique sorted till the service is due so its not a major problem
did nt get any options so again cant comment
cant recommend the car enough, one tip chose your colour wisely unless you like cleaning the car on a regular basis. i got night hawk black and i need to clean it all the time at the min.but when its clean it does look fantastic

Hi john07

mine is also a 2.2 EX

Fuel economy = about 46 - also a good mix of long distance M/Way stuff and shorter commuting
Servicing costs = company car - but service cost are in here somewhere... (sorry!)
Ride & handling = with 18" alloys, I find it fine (but my last 3 cars have all had 18"s too...) handling is great
Long journey comfort and end of journey fatigue (or not?) = no problems for me here, with regular 150+ mile trips
What you especially like about the car = LOL - where to start!?
What you especially do not like about the car = lack of rear visibilty, but even that's not a huge problem.
Optional extras worth having = reversing camera (see above), or at least parking sensors. Everything else is just a taste vs cost thing DON'T go for the bassworks though!
Problems/niggles you've experienced = HFT (DIY fix, now fine). Fuel filler cap (also now fixed)

overall - love it

Thanks for response - I will add 'em all up once I've got a good number and then decide whether to buy or not. I notice responses so far are from company car users - lucky things! I need someone to buy and run one for me . . Thanks and TTFN

John,

Fuel economy; Currently around 40/42mpg, Not great, but not bad for my driving style.

Servicing costs; Nil so far! Another few thousand miles yet!

Ride & handling; Great, big tyres grip the road well, feels safe and confident through the corners. Great fun.

Long journey comfort and end of journey fatigue (or not?); Takes a while to adjust the chair and make it comfortable for you. Have made a few long trips and no aches or pains at all, generally a nice place to sit for a few hours.

What you especially like about the car; I like how it look's like nothing else on the road, I like the attention it gets from others. I was getting new tyres put on the front this afternoon and the mechanics had clearly never had one in before as they were all gathering around it to look at the dashboard! Same with my work colleagues. I like the gadgets and toys inside, the NAV is very useful, cruise control handy. I like the dashboard, it looks complicated but everything is logically set out and easy to comprehend. Above all else I like how the car is 'fun'. Pleasure to drive.

What you especially do not like about the car; To be honest my only real gripe is that it didn't include any support for ipods/mp3 players.

Optional extras worth having; Extras are expensive, It depends what you can afford. I would say the glass roof and leather interior is very nice. Any of the bodykits also look great but again very costly. One thing you should consider is colour coding the bumpers, looks great!

Problems/niggles you've experienced. Fuel filler cap and HFT.

You must get one

Hi John,

As a high mileage user (regularly driving 30,000 miles per year) the ability to drive for 3 hours solid and feel totally refreshed at the end of it is important to me. This car was confirmed as being the best one I have had (my last 6 year old car did 155,000) when I went from London to Glasgow AND back in 13 hours a distance of of over 800 miles.

The car is a superb car, I still have problems with the HFT, however the rest of the car works well.

Options to go for? Well mine has the panoramic roof (must have if you have children to give it a much lighter cabin inside), reversing sensors and the reversing camera kit (to counter the minimal visibility from the rear screen) and kept to the standard wheels to keep the price down.

One thing that has not been mentioned on your thread is the choice of dealer! This is all important as while the car has clearly got better as the first 12 months has progressed, there are still minor niggles with the build quality and issues with the electronics (HFT in particular) and a good dealer will save you a lot of blood pressure!

Final comment? You have to have one!

they have a fix

admitedly it's only been out a couple of weeks, and there are still dealers out there who don't know about it , but it's a sprung bit of metal which pops the cap open when it should

early days yet, but initial reaction is that this fix (it's their 3rd or 4th attempt - probably earlier fixes were 'whilst we come up with something that really works') actually does do the job

and it takes - ohhhh - about 10 mins to do for the dealer

I'm a doddery old pensioner!

The only connection with the company is that they provided the pension to enable me to make the purchase.

Mind you in the Civic I feel quite a flash pensioner!!!

It's just embarrasing when I fill up with fuel that I always show my Saga card to try and get a discount!!!

But with the low fuel consumption that ain't very often.

Go, go, go, Civic!

Had my car a month or so no, done 1500 miles and overall like it very much. Very few issues with it.

Fuel consumption = 49.5 mpg (on points so stay below spead limit using cruise control Worth having)

Likes = looks, looks it gets, handling, engine torque, boot size, quality of fittings etc etc...

Dislikes = radio, poor bluetooth connection

Worth having accessories = parking sensors, panoramic roof, cruise control, folding wing mirrors, city pack (expensive but saves knocks)

Not worth having = Standalone bluetooth

You either like em or love em, no one hates em nor is indifferent about them.

I have the same model as you plan to get.
I took delivery in Feb. 2006, and initially there were a few niggles with a number of early ones. Mine being one of them. These have been put right under warranty (apart from the latest spring for filler flap) and the car is great.
Your 2007 model should be fine, in fact I'm trading mine in,in 12/18 months for a later one.

I have same model, doing a bit better on fuel than most seem to get just under 50mpg.
The car is comforatable in the front but not quite as good in the back.
Servicing I cant comment on.
What do I like, all the kit is built in, even if the HFT was poor its better now. The looks are, just different.
The normal stuff has gone wrong fuel filler etc.
I do between 50-60k miles a year its had 2 services and is 6 mmonths old. Its fine on long runs and its gets them every week. The rear visibility is poor but you will soon get use to that. The dealers seem OK
Not a bad choice for the next 18 months or so then we shall see whats around.

Hello John, Here's a continental point of view !

Fuel economy : At the moment 7.5 l/100 km

Servicing costs : Small repair made on the car (Parking Sensor to be refix after an Idiot bumb into my car ...) about 20 € (1/2 hour handwork) When I bought the car I ask for service prices : Same as Peugeot in time rate costso so it will be a litle bit more expensive (More oil) but for normal servicing it will be at about 100 to 150 €

Ride & handling: The best car I've owned. Safe and secure, but with sensation, and good ones ! Firm but not shaking !

Long journey comfort and end of journey fatigue (or not?) : The two first weeks we have driven about 2 000 km, with 900 km journeys... good confort, noise level is low for a diesel, the cruise control is fantastic for these long trip ! You're not so tired after that. But as said above take time to adjust your seat and wheel.

What you especially like about the car : The Inside Design, the engine, the driving sensation. the Magic seats (Wonderfull idea to transport wine boxes. And the rest ! The big size side Mirors, the dual zone air climate control, the Tissue used for the seats... The no bug, rattle or problem ! (I was feed up to bring my old peugeot every month to visit the dealer...

What you especially do not like about the car: angle rear view is poor but acceptable. The odd feeling I have each time I let my car on a park place... hoping I will not find a bumb or scratch or dents when I will be back !

Optional extras worth having; Panoramic glasroof is a must be, Rear parking sensor very usefull

Problems/niggles you've experienced. None up to now. But It is a car sold in France so I dont think we will have as many trouble as you've get !

One last Thing, Take time to choose your dealer, and spend some time to test drive your car ... If you're not totally conviced with it test others and come back for a second one. If again you're not fully convinced that it is the car for you, dont buy it and go for another brand (The Seat Leon is not a bad choice...)

Fuel economy; a little disappointed to start with but am told this will improve. Have been getting 35mpg doing 11 mile runs to work, involving mostly motorway but some congestion at either end. Last weekend did a 300 mile round trip, 50/50 A roads/motorways & got about 44mpg.

Ride & handling; a little rough but makes me feel in contact with the conditions I am driving in. Fun!

Long journey comfort and end of journey fatigue (or not?); at 6'2" tall I have the seat as far back as possible but find my right leg wants to lean outwards, causing bum/lower back ache during longer journeys. Trying to hold leg in line but causing tension in inner thigh. May get a knee cushion to support knee upright!

What you especially like about the car; looks so cool & is great to drive. Gadgets galore but sometimes a bit flaky on the HFT/voice control. Masses of space for my 7 piece, rack mount drum kit, leaving front passenger seat clear.

What you especially do not like about the car; Leg pain, local dealer.

Optional extras worth having; Rear camera good but takes getting used to - kind of used to just using mirrors for a more accurate park. Glass roof good to light back of car. Heated leather seats really good for aching back (not caused by car!).

Problems/niggles you've experienced; filler cap, HFT, w*nker local dealer (not where I bought from). Too many paint chips for 1300 miles. Satnav POIs are often in another country & satnav sometimes sends me on very strange brief detours (TomTom never did!).

This car makes me GRIN!! I have to go for a drive every lunchtime.
