When do you get your Reg Number?
I was wondering if someone could give me the heads up on when to expect to get my registration number in relation to my new car?
The car is supossedly due next week (ending 25th March) however as yet i don not have a chassis number or registration plate assigned - what do you think the chances are of getting it next week??? |

Mine was all very last minute - got the reg one day before picking up car but went onto Honda's free 7 day insurance so it didn't matter. However, if you are using your own insurance you need your reg a few days before so you can phone your insurance company, get a cover note to the dealer and then they can tax the car.

The dealer will have a list of Reg Marks which they can print out from the system they use to register the car with DVLA (it's called AFRL, Automated First Registration and Licensing). You should be able see this list and pick the Reg Mark you want so you can go away and arrange insurance. I say "should" as a lot of dealers don't bother showing you the list of Reg Marks and just go ahead and pick one for you but one of the DVLA AFRL procedures is you the customer should be able to choose your Reg Mark from their list.

I asked my dealer if I could pick my Reg from this list prior to purchase - but they said that the facility was no longer available. The DVLA just tells them the Reg and basically you get when you're given (?)

Yes same here 8 years ago - but I think the system has changed, I know 3 people who bought new cars for this March and none of them were allowed to choose their reg. |

The system is still the same. The dealer "downloads" Reg Marks from the DVLA to their pool of marks within the system. The pool can be 20, 30, 40 plus marks. They can then print out these marks to allocate to vehicles. What it sounds like they are doing is using another function of the system. Instead of selecting one of the Reg Marks from their pool of Marks they have a function to generate 3 random marks. These random Marks come from their own pool, they can selecting one of those or opt to generate another random 3 from their pool. They can use either function.

I had to phone up my dealer sales guy to ask for the reg number a week before it was due, and got a choice from the reg they were assigned. The dealers get the reg numbers in a block and its up to either the customer or dealer which car gets what reg.
Don't wait for the dealer to get in touch with you, as you might have to take whats left. If I hadn't been on the ball I could have been stuck with a crap reg, some of the ones offered were truly awful. |
