Switching personalised plate
I'm hopefully getting my new civic in May but I have a personalised plate on my current car which obviously I want on my new car however every time I've had experience with this (both on mine & my parents have one each) I've had problems. My mum has a new fiesta and the ford garage wanted to register it in a new plate and then transfer it over to her own plate.
Has anyone had any trouble with Honda switching plates? I guess it's specific to each dealer but every garage I speak to have a different opinion on it. The dealer I've ordered the car with has said it wouldnt be a problem and they'll sort it closer to the date, however it is still 6 weeks away plenty of time for a problem to arise! |

plate
My car was registrated on standard plate due to hiccup with the paperwork,waited another week for my personal plate to be changed over.
Dealer paid the fee so I wasn't bothered. |

If you're transfering a Reg mark from one car to your new unregistered car the dealer will need to order a V55 from the manufacturer as these registrations can't be processed the 'electronic' way via AFRL (check thread 'when do you get your reg mark' When do you get your Reg Number? ). This will take a couple of day probably for the V55 to arrive at the dealer. The dealer then needs to take the V55 along with your number plate retention form, cheque and insurance to their Local DVLA Office to get the car registered. Should be simple and straight forward if the dealer has all the correct paperwork.

You might want to consider just putting yours on retention until May to be absolutely sure. Then if there are any delays or anything, you're not waiting. Plus, if you give the dealer the retention certificate they can do it a lot easier. Not sure what it's like at the DVLA local offices nowadays, but last time I went to the new place at Preston, they couldn't and didn't do it over the counter any more meaning more delays. However, if you had yours on retention, they could do it straightaway I think.

If your'e purchasing a personalised reg to place on your new car (i.e a plate that is not currently registered to another car) do you still have to pay the £80 fee ?

From the DVLA web site;
DVLA's prices include VAT and the £80 assignment fee. This means there is nothing else to pay except for the costs of having the actual physical plates made up. NO HIDDEN CHARGES! This applies to registrations sold from our telesales business. |

I had transferred my 40 ALT onto a retention certificate whilst I awaited the arrival of my new Civic. The dealer handled all the registration without any problem.
No worries, dealers do it all the time. |

You say that but past experience says some dealers have problems one dealer (Ford) even refused to do it unless the sale was dependant on it the saleswoman said "you'd have to do it yourself after, we register it in an 07 plate and you can sort out the transfer" When my mum said OBVIOUSLY she wanted her own plate on the car she said "well I suppose we could do it if it means losing a sale". Needless to say they didnt buy a car there and went out of town to another dealer. Where it was delayed a week due to the DVLA transfer (either this was salesman BS or they genuinely had a problem)
My parents have had private plates for as long as I can remember and nearly always switch cars every 3 yrs and have never had a problem until the last 3 yrs!! |

I don't blame your mum for going elsewhere; so would I. There are plenty of helpful dealers waiting for your custom. Good luck. Al. |

OK sorry to drag this back up again but I am really concerned.
My dad's car has been at the dealer since last Wednesday he still doesnt have it and has been told it will be at least 10 days due to transfering the plate. Add to this a friend has bought a porsche cayenne turbo sitting at the dealer for 3 weeks due to yep plate transfer. I am really concerned apparently there is a problem at the DVLA perhaps its just my local office but I am gonna ring my dealer next week and insist he does something sooner than later with the paperwork after knowing for 50 days I've wanted my plate swapped I dont expect to be kept waiting for another 10 days just cos he hasnt done the paperwork on time. |
