Is This A Great Deal?

Hi everyone

I need some advise!

I am trading in my old Hyundai Accent which is 4 years old. I am getting a 2nd hand Honda Civic 1.8 EX in Alabaster Silver and pick it up tomorrow.

Now my question is this, the car is amazing, it is in great condition and has done 20,000 miles since new (March 2006).

The owner needed a quick sale as is emigrating so the dealer bought it off her.

The car has upgraded 18" Storm Alloy wheels, rear parking camera and a Playstation 2 built into 2 headrest DVD screens!

It really is the dogs b*llocks. The car is getting fully serviced and cleaned as we speak, and comes with a full tank of petrol.

The price for the above car?

£12,500 British Pounds!!!!!!

I was walking out the dealership when they threw this car at me as a last hope of me buying a car. In fact the 2nd hand car sales manager was actually going to buy the car.

Do you think this is a good deal? I was certain it was the deal of a lifetime when I got offered it, but was told it had oly done 10,000 miles. However I got a call this morning saying it had done about 20,000 miles which concerned me a bit.

However he did tell me that it had a camera kit and a PS2 with 2 screens which I wasn't expecting. I was only told a DVD screen with a DVD player.

So is this good?

Sounds like a decent deal, you might get them down on price as well. 20,000 miles is a lot for a one year old car but for todays enginges its not. It depends what sort of annual mileage you plan to be doing and how long you expect to keep the car.

Don't be swung by the Playstation if you aren't really going to use it, it'll be great if you have kids mind.

Overall, it seems like a decent enough price for a high spec car which is one year old. Mileage wouldn't concern me too much unless my you do loads of miles each year.

Hope this helps!

Also, if the car sales manager was really going to buy it, he would of and you would never of heard of this car.

I will only be doing about 11,000 miles a year max.

I am paying the car off over 5 years with a bank loan, and only tend to replace my car every 4 - 5 years anyway.

I have had my last car 4 years and it has taken me that long to find a car that I want. I don't think I would ever want to trade in the Civic as really is my dream car!!!!

I have told the dealers to make sure the breaks and tyres are ok as don't want to come back in a months time to pay for a new set of tyres and break pads!!!!

I told them the car better be in a good condition after doing that kind of millege or we will have to come to some sort of agreement on price again.

The sales reps argument was to say the car comes with a camera kit and PS2 which wasn't expected so that offsets the millage which is kind of true.

Accesories like PS2 or the rear camera didn't compensate the highest milage of the car. Have a look for the official quote for the car with same spec and milage. If it is close, go for it. If it is well above or u.nder, there is a problem.
Above : do you realy need a PS2 in a spacecraft design car ?
Under : It is very odd to have pro selling things below the market price. It must exist a bug somewhere. People didnt work for peanuts

Ask them to upgrade to a PS3 and you'll have it!

Based on 5 years and 11k per year the mileage will be 75k which isn't that much to be honest and won't affect the value of the car after such a long period of time when you come to get rid of it.

Make sure the price looks ok (search on ebay for a 1.8 ex shows a car with 13.5k miles for £15k) so £12.5k you have been quoted does seem pretty good - make sure though that there isn't some fundamental problem with the car. I'd be surprised if there is if you are buying from a Honda dealer cos it'll ony cause them headaches in the future when you have to keep returning it.

You did wise mentioning the wheels, try and get a full set on for little or no extra cost.

Remember that they always say that extras wont normally get you any more money for the car, it just makes it easier to sell.

IMO the extras are not worth anything as you didnt ask for them to be there.

However, I cannot see another 1.8 EX on autotrader for under £13k.

I looked at 2nd hand cars before I ordered my new EX and to be honest I didnt want to buy anything with over 10k on the clock - my current car has 21k and is an 03 so it would be silly for me to go to anything with such high milage and as civics are holding their value at the moment it was more econominal for me to buy new - the salesman had an EX with leather in blueish silver with 18" storms but said it was an ex demonstrator and had been abused so he wouldnt like to sell it to me anyway!

Dont be swayed by the extras the price seems extremely low but perhaps its because its done 20k in a year I would be highly concerned this car has been ranted however if its all you can afford snap it up!

I think that is a superb deal. Look on the Honda site for an EX with similar mileage and it will probably be up for £15k.

You did not say if this was from a Honda dealer? If it is they surely cannot sell a Honda Approved car if there are known problems (except for recall faults)

Thanks everyone for all the helpful comments!

Yes it is from a Honda dealer.

The car is in good condition and they are fully servicing the car before I pick it up tomorrow. I have also told them to rectify any outstanding recall notices.

Like you said, I didn't ask for the extras so all I should be paying for is the standard EX model. I looked on What Car and the price comes out as ok which is good.

I am really looking forward to getting the car, and have never felt excited about driving a car before!

I hope it puts some fun back into driving!

Trade in price would be around £10,000 so they're making £2.5k. You should get another 2 years warranty, tyres should be new if its done 20k.

If you've not done the deal offer 11k and see where that gets you. Be confident to walk out if you don't get anything off. What were you offered for the Hyundai? was it a trade in? What did you get offered? Which accent was it and how many miles? You'll probably find you were offered well below book for it to make the Civic sound like a bargain. I've got a Glasses book for February if you give me the details I can tell you.

Don't forget, if something looks too good to be true...it usually is.

I reckon its a very good deal, for the spec you are getting. 20k is not a lot really, some members here have touched that and some beyond, still has 2 years of a warranty to run remember and no i-vtec has failed yet (apparently!).

Don't forget you also have the balance of the 90k/ 3 year warranty as backup. I'd say go for it, don't forget when your trading in, youve really no idea what the car is costing, he may over or under value your trade in to change the way the deal looks.

Thanks for all the help and great advise guys!

The dealer also paid my remaining finance on the Hyundia 1.3 CDX which was £2500.

I have gone for it and got the car!!!!!!!

I picked it up yesterday and also got the tyre insurance thrown in for nothing. Not much but it's handy.

The car is out of this world and have never seen such a sexy car in my life. I wouldn't swap it for any other car out there. The voice cammands work brilliantly and the comments I have got from every single person who has seen the car have been amazing. Everybody makes such great comments on the look of the car, the technology inside the car etc. Everyone who sees it has a smile on there face

I took my 12 year old nephew and his 2 friends to a party yesterday and they were screaming about how cool the car is. They wouldn't get out of the car and were just shouting at everyone else to look at them in this cool car!!!!!!!

The DVD screens are very neat and look fantastic, with the PS2, wireless headphones & controllers stored under a rear seat (removable if wanted). I will take some pictures of the car later today and post them on here.

The alloys are not the Storms but the 18" Altimos, which I am not bothered about as I personally think they make the car look even more sporty.

A couple of glitches that are getting sorted by the dealer on Tuesday, which are the front headlight washers not working and the boot hatch opens very slowly like the hydraulic gas pumps are not doing what they should.

It is great to be able to drive and have fun!
