price new 2.2EX

Hi!

I'm now in the stage when within the next 4-5 weeks I should be in a position to order my new 2.2ex (galaxy grey) from local stealer.
I phoned them up today out of interest to see what the current wait time was for the model mentioned above and mentioned that if I bought it from that dealer (ie I might buy from another) which pricked up the ears of the salesman.

I said I would buy from whichever dealer would give me the best deal. I said I would be looking for £1000 discount and a reasnable price for by Px.

I think this shocked him as he asked had I been told that another dealer would give me £1000 off and I said yes... (well I know other people on this forum have got £800 - 1000 off buying same spec).

He didn't ask which dealer had quoted me that but did sound surprised as he said that all dealers work on the same margins. Fine I thought
Well if all dealers work on the same margins and if one can do it (whilst still making profit) then surely others can ... unless they are being greedy!

He asked what I has as Px and I told him Corsa (hangs head in shame!) and he said that some people come in with valuations from WhatCar that are unrealistic, so I told hime that I was looking in Glass and Parkers as price wise. He said that bear in mind that these are only guide prices and that these companies don't actually don't buy and sell these cars just quote prices.

Well AFAIK when it comes to Px the dealer enters details (e.g. Corsa 1.2 SXi 3 dr and age and milage into computer and it gives them 3 prices (good, average and poor)) so I would have thought that it would be based around glases / parkers.

I hae already done a glases valuation on line and got certificatefrom their valuation but I can only hope that it helps.
I'll also do one from Parkers.

There is the vauge possibility that I will be ale to sell private and so go in to negotiate better deal but its unlikely.

So..
Is £1000 off standard 2.2EX unreealistic as salesman tried to sugest?

I looked tonight on Drivethedeal and prices were as follows

list £18,466 (no paint)
DTD £17,059 (no paint) £1,390 saving
Whatcar target £17,570 £880 saving

list with paint £18,825
DTD with paint £17,399 £1,425 saving

so Do I go armed with print outs from DTD and broadspeed / whatcar?
Surely if a dealer can sell the car with £1400 discount and still make a rofit then any dealer can do the same? as my stealer said that there all buying them in at same price?

How many lies have I been told and what thoughts / helpful comments do people have?
its only the 2nd car I've bought!
if they don't want to give decent discount or good value for Px (either way its the overall price I'm concerned about) thne do I just get up and walk away?

Many thanks
Chris
(inexperienced car buyet .... but desperate for the silly grin!)
ps their system was down so expecting call tomorrow (Wed) in regards to delivery times.

When i bought my car i went in with the DTD paperwork and basically said match it and i will buy it from you or if not then there wont be a deal. After the usual barrage of dont trust internet sites blah blah blah they backed down as i began to walk away and matched the DTD price. So there is room to play with but you just have to stand your ground. Dont get sucked in by the salesmen pitch. Also if they wont budge on price get up and walk away. Dont be surprised if they call you again within a couple of days to try and get the business.

When I ordered my 1.8ex a month ago, it seemed the stealer would give more on accessories (they probably get dirt cheap), over the basic car. I hate haggleing, but managed without too much hassle (10 mins) to get the following:

Paint £375, Discount £50 = £425 discount
Speaker Rings £80, Penta Wheels £650 = £730 free accessories
Saving £1155

Couldn't get Service pack like some have, as it actually costs them.

As I anticipate my delivery date to slip like others, I will try and get other things thrown in as well...

The key thing to look at is "cost to change"

yes - you might get £1500 off via DTD - but then you've still got to sell your Corsa. Which involves costs for adverts, fending off 'resellers - we have 937 people who want to buy your car!' and tyre kickers, wasting time waiting for people not to turn up, or the phone not to ring...

How much the dlr will take off will also depend on how you're buying the Civ.
If you take out dlr finance - the dealer makes some money there.
If you walk in with a bunch of fivers - the dealer doesn't make money.

Also, if the dealer can chuck in some 'freebies' such as mats / wheels etc, these aren't costing him as much as he is 'giving' you.
" Speaker Rings £80, Penta Wheels £650 = £730 free accessories" that thefireflies got may have only cost the dealer (say) £300.

Weigh up you options with a big bit of paper and a pencil

DTD can do good prices because they don't have to pay for flashy showrooms and flashier salespeople.

If you are happy that DTD can supply the car you want at the price you want, and can sell your Corsa at a price near or above the PC value - then go into the dlr armed with that - you have nothing to loose

I just went round four garages and went for the one that offered the best deal.
At the end of the day what swung it for me was the part-ex which was much better than the other dealers offered.
Apart from that, the only offical "freebie" I got was the space saver wheel.

At the end of the day, I ended up with a saving of around £900 on the list price.

My dealer actually offered me a price for my Megane, then reconsidered and upped it by £600 even though one of the wheel arches had been scraped. Maybe thats just the Irish for you...

Go in armed with DTD print outs and say thats what you can get it for either they sell it for that or you buy from DTD, either way you still get your Civic its up to them if they want to turn business away or not. Where did you get yours czechplastik, Agnew Boucher?

How does DTD work?

Ok DTD prices are good, but who gets what
I understand if I buy from DTD then I pay the dealer on collection.
Does DTD then get a percentage of the value or is it just the dealer gives DTD for bringing the customer to them.
I'm trying to think what lines the stealer will use as why they can't match the DTD price or to try and steer me away from DTD, and more to the point what points I can make to come back at them ie challenge their possible lies....

you dont need to make any points to the dealer. You just state to them that you will walk if they dont match the dtd price. If they want your business they will soon back down. But if the dealer came to within £300 i would take the dealers offer as its just easier to deal with a local dealer instead of someone over a phone.

I think £300 is probably the walk-away point, yes.

Anything more than that, I'd probably go online.

Same here - for £300 difference to drive the deal - which was what I got from my dealer - makes sense to use your local dealer - more likely hopefully! to get better service/higher up the courtesy car list I guess if your using the dealer you bought the car from.

I didn't expect my dealer to match the internet prices exactly, nor the what-car target price...however I wanted the deal to be in roughly the same ballpark. In the end I went for a Type-S GT diesel for £16,995 + mats plus my part-exchange which seemed generous to the tune of a few hundred quid.

I did have another factor influencing me.....the dealer had the car in the compound already so could turn around the whole thing within 2 weeks. DTD or other internet sites may have meant a 2 month wait....

Also, I've never bought a brand new car before, but I guess there is some mileage in building a sound relationship with your local dealer, as these are the guys who will be the port of call for warranty claims etc. I just feel that walking in there and dealing with their people, buying the car from them and getting my servicing done with them may repay me IF I needed them to show some goodwill in the other direction should I have a claim. Just a feeling mind, but worth bearing in mind.

Minkster,

I don't want to pour cold water on your impending purchase, but in my experience the guys that sell the car don't have anything to do with you omce you have signed on the dotted line. You are passed over to the service department. That was the case when I bought my brand new X-Type 6 years ago.

Things might be different with a Honda dealer, but I doubt it. The salesmen are just chasing sales. And of course to keep the warranty valid you are tied into getting the car serviced with them for the next 3 years.

Anyway, that said have a good time with the new car. I don't know if you are getting yours from Grantham Honda but that is where I just got mine from 3 weeks ago.

Yes, getting it from Grantham Honda.

To be honest, I really like them up there. Compared to some of the other dealers I visited (including Audi, BMW, Volvo), they seemed very friendly and attentive without being pushy. I've made the deposit and sorted the deal out but they haven't once tried to push their finance on me whereas some of the other dealers wanted to talk figures as soon as I asked for a test drive!

Also, I believe they are part of a small network (Lincolnshire Honda), so whilst I appreciate that I won't be dealing with the sales staff beyond the sale, it should still be possible to build a relationship of sorts with them...especially as they have various incentives to keep services within their network (such as free MOTs after 3 years, extended warranties etc)

Sounds like the same sort of experience that I had. If anything IU would say they didn't have enough sale staff. The day I went for a visit I got halfway through talking with the the guy I was dealing with when one of his previous customers came in (to make the purchase). I was given the keys to a car and told to go for a test drive, no paperwork or anything. Could have driven off with the car without a trace.

Good look.
