How did you sell your previous car?

Hey guys!

I'm looking at different ways of selling my pride and joy (comp car comin) and thought of a few options and was wondering if anyone had any stories to tell or advice they could give me on the options in the poll.

Thought I would do the poll as a snapshot on whats most popular!! You can vote for more than one option if you've sold a couple or more recently by different methods!!

J

I part-ex'd my 2.0 Automatic R reg Mondeo 30,000 miles (Didn't buy it cause I liked it, bought cause I was trying to save money), unfortunately it was using petrol faster than I could put it in. Bought the car for £2000 part-ex'd for £1500 6 months later in favour of the Civic, told the sales guy I had to clear of any outstanding debt, before I even looked at another car.

When Mrs JoeyF bought her Jazz, she had a Clio which she bought on a PCP, when we went to part ex it she/we owed more than we got offered for part ex. I wasn't having negative finance so just before we walked out of the door, I was told about halves and thirds.

Halves and thirds is a get out clause that is in a PCP agreement, basically what that means is if you have paid over half the money you owe over the full term, you can hand the car back to the finance people without paying any more money. (We bought the car over a 3 year term, with a final garunteed lump sum) We had the car for just over 2 years and paid exactly half of the cars new value.

e.g. if the car you buy is worth £10,000 (for ease of working out!) including any interest, and you pay at least £5000 then you can hand the car back, even if the car is only worth £3000 when it is time to sell..

This saved us from having any extra money from the Clio added to the finance on the Jazz.

Although we didn't have a depsoit for the Jazz, we got rid of a car Mrs JoeyF didn't want to drive due to the watchdog review of the dodgy bonnet clip.

I have done this on a 306 I had and the good thing about it is that it does not affect your credit rating etc.

One little tip I found is that if you have a part-ex, leave a list of other car manufacturers and adresses on the dash, so he sees it when looking around your car, this enabled me to get a little extra discount on my car, as he though the Civic was one of many options I was looking at, even though it wasn't.

I sold my Celica 190 through Petrolheads.co.uk.
Very easy to use and set up the ad, and it's free.
I advertised 2 weeks before my Civic was due, knowing that the Celica was definitely a 'first-to-see-will-buy' car.
I priced it to sell quickly, which would still give me £1000 more than the Part Ex.
Of course, my dealer brought the Civic delivery date forward a week, which was great, but it meant I only had a week to sell the Celica.
Luckily someone called, and came down from 'up north' and got themselves a genuine motoring bargain (not many of them about).
They paid cash, which I took straight down to the dealer and collected my new car.
It all worked out very well, (except that it was P***ing with rain all that day).

After 7 years, I opted out of my Company Car scheme, just to drive a Civic. Good choice so far.

Part-exed my Megane, easiest and quickest way to do it, obviously less value than if sold myself but was done for convenience.

I didn't think I had seen one of the most classic types of Subaru ever made around recently. Now I know why

Another lazy bas***d here
I PX my Subaru Legacy, I didn't get as much as I wanted.
I had tried advertising it in AutoTrader, but just got 2 weeks of time wasters offering peanuts.
Although it did reinforce most of the stereotypes about second hand car dealers.

Well not quite!
The only car that competed with the Civic in evoking my enthusiasm for driving was the Subaru Legacy.
Also a very inspiring car to drive through my test route, although different than my beloved Mustang Sally

Flogged my 150k 1997 Civic 1.5 LSi 4 door saloon (Jap built - none of that Swindon tosh) to a mechanic mate of mine cos the gearbox was too noisy to sell to anyone else.

Good job I did cos a week after I sold it to him the gearbox spewed its ring completely.

Sold my 70K Mercedes Benz A170 CDi to a mechanic friend as it was getting to be too small for my family. It was also starting to cost me re new parts.

My previous car was also a leasecar, so left it at the lease company.

i sold my car 5 months before my new civic was due. i then went out and bought a banger for £350 with full mot and service history. i made an extra £3000 my selling my car when i did compared to what i was going to get for the p/x when i was due to pick up my civic.

i put it on ebay, cost me 30p for the listing and got 2 people interested in it. i then removed the listing so i didnt have to sell it to the highest bidder, but i did state in the listing that i was going todo this.

it was 2 weeks after that one of the people interested came and looked at it, see how good it was, so it does pay to keep them clean and looked after, and gave me my full asking price. then came back todays later with the cash.

the banger i bought is now being used by my girlfriend who passed her test in september, and has just gone through the mot again with no faults, so it will be with us for abit longer.

i would in now always sell my car long before getting another one, as you can get more money for it and there are plenty of good used bangers about to tied you over until your nice new motor turns up.

I got a good PX deal on mine so I was happy to do that rather than sell it privately especially as I had to transfer the plate and it was extra hassle! I've always part exchanged cars so wouldnt know where to begin with selling privately to be honest

Saying goodbye to it today finally! Had I said goodbye on time it wouldnt have bothered me but these last few weeks when I've lost interest in the civic I've grown to love my ST170 in a new way and will in a way be sad to see it go

Still running fine

Sometimes I think the punto makes less noise than the civic
