Dealership trying it on... badly.
Today I experienced the most blatant example of a dealership - dare I say it - scam. My 2006 ES has an issue with the alarm (I have a thread about it) and my local dealership kindly said they would fix it for free as long as I could get it to them.
So, off it went this morning (£35 local recovery firm) and later today I got a call from a guy in sales saying that he'd see my car in the forecourt and knew a customer who was after just a model with low mileage. Mine has done less than 4K a year (we bought a Chrysler Grand Voyager for the school runs and holidays, etc) and was curious. He explains that if I sold it privately I would only get about £5K (!) for it but he was willing to offer me £8K as a favour to the other customer (alarm bells starting up). He then adds - get this - that to get the £8K he would offer me a brand new Civic Ti for £10K (total price £18K)! Taken aback I then pointed out that his 'offer' was basically get me to spend £10K with the dealership. The conversation then broke down very quickly once he realised I knew he was trying it on and had no interest in trading. I'm guessing times are hard for everyone, including Honda dealerships, but this was just such a blatant attempt at making a sale it made me laugh! He actually took the time out to look at the car, find out who owned it and call them. I wonder if this is their policy when any 5+ year old Hondas come in. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? (I didn't even know the Civic Ti existed until I looked it up! Quite nice really |

EMG tried the exact same thing with me the other week. I told them I'd already sold the car and got a new one. They said, well why not trade in your new one for a newer one...persistant buggers

A salesman did the same to me! Whilst I was on the phone I asked him to look at my car a bit closer and tell me why he thought I would want to pay to trade it in for a standard fn2! His response was what was an fn2?

Honda didnt think about that one. Why are they on this save the polar bears campaign, yet in USA they are still pumping out monstors. They must think really low of the UK market. |

It is just going to take a while longer to convince the US market but with their emission laws tightening they won't be too far behind. |

The scam would have been if you'd had the new one delivered back to you with a bill for it. |

Yea I've heard this happen, another method they use is they send you a letter.
The letter says how your car is sought after and that they want to buy it off you, obviosuly you'll have to buy a new car in the process... I guess it's not an all out scam but they way they go about it is a bit shady and dishonest. They could just say, btw your car would be worth £xxxx if you traded in now. |
