I was looking at the Toyota Rav 4, Nissan Qashqai and Skoda octavia before I even looked at the Civic.

Toyota Rav 4 - Because I like the look of it and I fancied a nice big car, then looked into it more and decided I liked to eat occassionally.

Nissan Qashqai - I saw it in Leipzig and liked it but to get the same options as in the Civic it was a lot more expensive.

Octavia - because I already have a skoda and was just looking to sort of upgrade.

Then I went to the Leipzig Car show with a couple of friends and we all fell in love with the civic. We got into the car and turned the key and all at the same time said 'WOW'. From that moment on I was smitten - and thankfully was the wife!

I was in the Vauxhall Garage looking at getting another repair done on my Megane thinking I quite like the Astra. Anyway the mechanic came out to look at my Megane started talking saying what the hell did you buy one of these for they're rubbish etc etc, I mentioned I quite liked the Astra and was also looking at a Saab. He turned round and said all rubbish, if you want a good car then buy Japanese (I bet his Vauxhall bosses love him). Went next door and looked around at the nice shiny Honda Accords outside, went inside, saw the civic and decided thats the car for me without even driving it. Two weeks later it was mine never looked back.

can't comment on the newest model - I got rid of my (2 yr old, had from new) A3 5 years ago.

That model was quite nice - though wife and daughter found it very claustraphobic in the back, and there wasn't half the rear leg room the Civ gets.

Absolutely nothing bad to say about the car at all, never had any real problems with it

Just the price when specing to Civ levels - an extra £4 or £5 thousand makes about £150 extra contribution per month on my lease scheme...
No way that I could justify that this time round

(The R GT would cost me about £40 more than my 2.2 EX if both spec'd to same level)

It is for some reason a very underestimated car, atleast over here on the Scandinavian market.
The Mazda 3 played its role in my choice of car: The car park at work can take 250 cars - so it was a bit search to find my silvery grey ZX among the 100 other silver colored cars. But I always noticed immediately a vivid blue Mazda 3 standing there. So now its two vivid blue cars at the car park. A pretty little sunshine story on a cold monday morning I think. And not totally off topic...

New car

Stumbled on the Type S accidentally. Went to test drive a Grande Punto Multijet Sporting (good engine, but cheap feeling), a Golf 1.9 TDi Match and 2.0 TDi (automotive catatonia).

Always told myself the Civic was awful; would date badly; ridiculous looking but I then though Ive never been in one. So I left VW and popped to Honda. Test drove a 2.2 SE and was amazed by it. Wanted one.

Sat in showroom Type S and fell in love; I wanted one! two months, 2300 miles later and I still rate it!

  • Focus ST170 + Practical, brilliant handling - getting a bit old
  • Focus ST225 + Practical, good handling (allegedly), good performance, - But Dealers car needed the computer / ECU reset before I could test drive !!, thirsty , ugly , will cost a fortune in depreciation .
  • Golf GTi + Very Good in most areas - Boring, couldn't live with the grabby brakes, dealer attitude
  • Audi R8 + Brilliant, magnetic dampers - impractical, can't afford it!
  • Honda S2000 + Brilliant, build reputation - impractical
  • Honda Type S 2.2 + 5 doors, amazing diesel - the fun of the type R pipped it.
  • Honda CTR + Brilliant, great fun, low cost, the gearbox / engine is an engineering masterpiece, dealer attitude - I thought motorways were flat till I drove this car. If it had 5 doors, IRS and better shocks it would be perfect for me.
I have always wanted a practical Honda Type R you can use every day and the CTR delivers.

I had complete intentions of going for the VW Golf 2.0 GT TDi for a couple of months. Had just returned from uni for Christmas on the Thursday and was up at VW on the Friday, test drove the car and was basically ready to do a deal. This is then were VW lost and Honda gained. One minute VW had the right car, the next I'd get a phone call to say it was a different colour, then it was suddenly the older model... eventually after being told about 3 or 4 different cars, which all turned out to be different than what I was first told, I was rapidly losing patience.
So before going back up to VW again I thought I'd stop off at the Honda Garage to have a 'quick' look at the Civic. Those of you from N.Ireland will know of Boucher Road, pretty much every car dealership you could think of is on this one road, so it’s very handy for popping between dealers
Needless to say my 'quick' look at the Civic before going to VW turned into 4 hours and a test drive, and of course me heading home with a big grin on my face!

The other cars I considered were the Audi A3 (Too expensive for what it is) and the BMW 1 Series (VERY expensive for what it is although RWD would have been nice)

I decided I needed a new car just before Christmas, my (almost) 5 year old 307 has started to develop some niggling little problems and I figured that they were the start of things to come, so thought it best to trade her in.

I didn't have a clue about what car I wanted, so I looked on the JD power website, their New Vehicle Advisor gave me a list of cars to look at, these were:

1. SKODA OCTAVIA
2. TOYOTA COROLLA
3. HONDA ACCORD
4. HONDA CIVIC

I didn't fancy the Skoda and my Dad has a Corolla so I didn't want one of those, so I popped over to the Honda website and had a look at the Civic, I was hooked from the start.

I've test driven a Focus and an Astra just to give me a comparison, but it was the Civic that won me over and as I'm a gadget freak I went for the EX. I pick it up in March and I can't wait.

I have yet to buy a Civic, but it will be done in the next month or so. I have more or less decided what options I want. But I have a very very hard time deciding which colour I should choose.

My list of potential cars...

1. Megane Renault Sport. Just because I love a few things about my current Megane, but it would be greatly improved with stiffer springs and more power. The Megane has a nice design, albeit not a very practical one. The only reason I didn't buy one on impulse is the rather high price. After all it costs as much as a Golf GTI.

2. Golf GT (140 or 170). They are nice, fairly comfortable and known for quite good. quality. My company buys all its cars from VW and all employees of my company can buy one at a discount. The 1.4 liter twin charger at 170 HP would cost me about the same as the list price of a Civic 1.8 Sport with options for about 30,000€. However - in Sweden the Golf is very common and to be honest quite boring. The GT 140 would actually be very competitive with the Honda (price), even though I add quite a few options including the DSG gearbox.

3. Volvo V50, a nice car, but sooo boooring... Also fairly expensive, but it is easy to get a used one with decent options.

At first I didn't want to have a Civic as it "only" was 140 hp. I wanted (and a part of me still want) a 5D Type R. Now I feel petty much in love with it. More test driving on Saturday and hopefully I will be able to see a few other colours live.

I looked at the Audi A3 and liked it, went for a test drive in the Civic, the first time I had really seen one, went through a tunnel and the dash lights came on that was it for me. Easily pleased me

I was strongly considering a Seat leon FR TDI 170 or a mazda 3 sport, but the seat was too cheap feeling inside and the boot way too small. Quite good to drive though, and looks good from outside. The Mazda was OK but really dull looking inside & out.

Neither could compare to the civic in terms of looks (interior & exterior) and space. I really would have liked a Type S but having a new baby the five door was the sensible option, and I don't regret it one bit!

I'm looking at the moment, I have a 2005 Focus Zetec, it's a great handling car, but i am about to change it (it's a company car and i fancy a change - and Civic's are cheap lease cars). I've driven the Civic, it's certainly not as good to drive as the Focus, but it's OK. If i get one i think i will get a 1.8 ES as i like the roof!

I have a bit of an issue with the build quality - some of the plastic's in the Civic seem to be made of the same plastic's used for making margarine tubs. An interesting interior but it's quality let's it down - it's certainly not as good as the Ford.

I've looked at the Audi A3, which lack's any feeling at all when your driving it, and i was just left wondering what you were paying for?

These are made of quite good plastics, after all we eat from them

If my current car has to go, it can only be replaced by another Honda. And this Honda should have IMA and CVT definitly. So the current Civic Sedan is a good candidate, or if our 5 doors hatch comes in Hybrid, that will be my choice. For sure.

Looked at three main contenders.

2.0 new Mondeo zetec
2.0 Skoda Octavia elegance
1.8 Civix EX

Had a 2.0tdi octavia at the time and didn't want the same depsite it being a great car. Couldn't get enough kit on the mondeo for the price so went for the honda by default really. Every time i get on a b road i love the civic, but every time i end up half deaf after a motorway trip or crash over the tiniest of bumps i yearn for the Mondeo.
