Trading in advice
Hi all, really glad I found a Civic specific forum!
I'm currently looking at a CTR GT (new), and am trading in a 2002 Alhambra Diesel. I went to one Honda dealer and they offered £6K!!! and didn't even seem bothered about selling a car to me (Letchworth, UK). I'm test driving one in Cambridge where I work tomorrow, so will see what they offer. Any tips / advice before I go in? I'm interested in the service pack £500, so will keep this in my back pocket if I need to negotiate. Not really interested in any other options, although will take a look at the sat nav (although I already have one on my Palm I use a lot, with TomTom). I'm hoping to get around £9K, although it clearly depends on what he will take off the list price. Given they are only apparently allowed 2 per month per dealer, it's a sellers market! I could sell it private but don't want to be without a car (the worry of selling too early / late and not having a car). Do dealers "lend" cars for any period? I have heard of this at some other main dealers. How common is this with Honda? Any other tips / advice / experience is appreciated. Rob |

I would have said 6K was good for a 5 year old
Seat Alhambra What is the Mileage, service history, condition are you the 1st owner?? If you are lucky you might get 7 - 7.5K slightly more if you sell it privatly Type R's are walking out the door by themselves so the dealers don't need to try that hard although you may get a small discount ie £200-£300 off All you can do is shop around - be prepared to do the leg work |

The Honda dealer in Letchworth is very good at giving long test drives (well they did for me, half a day in a petrol Sport, the other half in a diesel ES), but I'm not sure what they have in the way of CTR demo cars.
The Cambridge area is percieved as being "rich", so dealers do not usually offer much, I doubt the Cambridge dealer will be much better. I part exchanged, eventually getting to within £200 of my original cost to change budget, but it did mean talking, then walking away, then getting a call to come in and discuss and getting slight improvement on the trade in price, which I eventually accepted. Thanks for the replies. It never ceases to amaze me how different the book values are. Book says around £9k for trade in with the mileage (68K), but they only offer 6K against a brand new motor...
I can get around 8K private, but don't want to be without a car for a few weeks. Is this the price I have to pay! I'm going to see how cambridge goes, then travel to Bedford also as it's nearer where I live |

May sound silly, but if you can get £2-3k more for your Seat, would it not be wise to sell privately and then hire a car for 2-3 weeks while you wait delivery, surely this must be cheaper.

The Honda Dealer in Swindon openly said "they" did not want my trade-in, but what they did was put the details of the car to the small second hand dealers around the area and get them to "bid" on my car...this seemed to be a well organised and regular thing for them and certainly helped them seal the deal with me....
In the end they came back with nearly what i expected to get selling privately (!) but i had a week without a car as they wanted it before my Civic was ready. Easy to cover.... The price i got was so good i could not turn it down and i`m glad i did not. I also agree the Type R is not a car they need to push at the moment they probably have more buyers than cars so maket forces dictate that discounts will be thin on the ground.....if you really want it you will have to pay for it !! |

The trouble with trying to get shot of a Seat on to a Honda dealer is they like selling Hondas not Seats. They would most likely sell it on to a local Seat dealer or an auction house. They almost certainly will not want to put it on their forecourt, it's an 'image' thing. Someone somewhere will offer a 'below recommended' price on a CTR, just get on the phone and ring round. That small investment in a couple on phone calls could end up with you making substantial savings. Best of luck anyway. Let us know how you get on. "You live and learn. Then you die and forget it all!" Charles H. |

Just come back from test drive. Of course I want one now
Dealer offered me £6900 for the Seat, and called two local dealers (similar to above) for both. This is a little more the direction I want to go! I could get £8,000-£8250 private, but then have to juggle the hassle factor / not having car for a period etc. I was also interested in the £500 servicing, so I reckon I could get a discount on this if I pushed. He would not budge on the car price at all, so most I'm expecting is a few hundred quid. Any more advice would be great, and thanks again for the replies Rob p.s. that car really moves at 7000RPM!!! |
