Should I complain?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Basically I recently bought an ex-demo Civic Type-S from my dealer. I had to wait 4 days to pick up the car so they could do an inspection of it and get it taxed. However, when I picked it up I started to get the distinct impression that the inspection had been forgotten about, especially since I had to wait for them to tax it that morning (they were very apologetic though) and the car didn't really look any cleaner or anything since I'd last seen it on the day I signed the paperwork.

Anyway, a couple of days after picking it up I decided to acquaint myself with checking the engine fluid levels and was slightly worried that the oil level looked a little low. Sure enough, a mere 6 days after collecting it, the Engine Oil Level warning came on.

I know the car is an ex-demo, but surely it's not too much to expect them the dealer to have made sure it had a decent amount of oil in it - particularly considering they were supposed to have inspected it before I collected it? Do you think I should complain? I've actually still got the receipt for the motor oil in the car.

Cheers guys.

Yes, do it in a diplomatic way first, then shout a them if they do not listen

PS I'm very surprised the way your dealer in the UK do the PDI and the delivery.
My dealer do it with me and spend one our with me to check the car and to explain all the tricks and details... I ask him why they do that and he said that Honda ask them to do it this way

You mean the light is a 'You're Stuffed' indicator? Doesn't sound right to me.

The Civic has a Oil Level sensor - the warning that came up on my Type S was simply the 'Check Oil Level' indicator. From what I gather, it's more of a "top up the oil level as soon as possible, or else you're stuffed".

Either way, I'm going to go down to the dealer and make my feelings felt tomorrow.

Doesn't matter whether the car is new, ex-demo or secondhand, the dealer should have ensured that it was at least maintained to the required standard (including checking all coolant and oil levels, topping up where necessary). If the dealer was at all decent they should have carried out a full service prior to your collection.

Definitely complain, if you don't get satisfaction fom them, complain to HUK.

Complain for sure, especially as they charged you for the oil! (either that it's using a lot which is also a worry).
The oil light is a low level warning light so it's not too late unless you ignore it for ages and teh oil pressure light comes on.

It does seem that some of the Diesel engines use a fair bit of oil while running in....

Over the first 5000 miles i was worried but now its really settled down and does not seem to use any (20000) but i check it regularly anyway...

It's terrible to admit this, but I didn't go in the end - I was just too busy. Plus I didn't really know what it was I was going to try and get out of complaining...

That said, I do feel a plank. They should've checked the oil level and topped up as part of the PDI, surely?

I would have gone back and sarcasticly told them that the oil level warning light must have a problem.

When they comment about a possible low oil level you could have mentioned that highly unlikely as they had just performed a PDI.

I had the opposite problem a few years ago after buying an ex-demo Vauxhall Zafira from my local(ish) dealer.
The car was 6 month / 4000 miles old so I asked for it to have the 1st service before I collected the car.
In inspection I noticed that all the NO boxes were ticked on the service schedule including the change oil & filter. The garage said it was a mistake and offered to have a new serice book sent and the correct work stated on the book.. I refused and asked for a copy of the job card.

Anyway.. On the way home the engine management light came on and the car went into limp mode. I was only a mile from home so I limped home. When I got home I opened the bonnet to see oil everywhere, smoke from every hole and a general mess.
I called the dealer who came straight out and wanted to tow the car away. I insisted that the oil level was checked before it left and, after an 18 mile drive, the oil was 2" above full on the stick.... Semmed like oil was re-filled BUT the old oil not drained.

I refused the car, insisted on a full refund OR a replacement NEW car or I would go to the local media & national car press.

I was invited back to the dealers where they initially refused until I kicked up a propper fuss... I left with my old car, a cheque for a full refund and a £500 voucher towards ANY car from the group.. and agreed never to let on where I got the car from.
