20,000 pounds you say?

Isn't the answer obvious?

Buy a car for 16,000 (nearly new Type S?) and get your parents to pay the insurance premium

Not sure what you do next year though.....

It's basically down to your parents........they buy you the car you want @ £20,000.....looks like they'll need to pay a big bill for the insurance.

I'd be making sure your parents know and understand that £4000 doesn't insure the car for life....if they won't \ can't pay next years insurance........can you???

£4000 ONLY for 12 months........you have not mentioned the insurance excess........if you have an accident you will be paying a large amount of £££'s just to get the insurance company to get things moving.........

Life's full of hard choices.............but choosing a car for free is not one of them.

Buy a 2nd hand car and bank the rest of the money until you can easily insure a Civic \ new car.....surely your parents see that as a mature and well thought out option...rather than throwing money away. Just my opinion.

Your insurance policy carries a policy excess.

The excess is a sum of money which you may have to pay if making a claim on your policy.

An example :
If you have a car insurance policy which has an excess of £250, and you damage your car and make an insurance claim to have it repaired (your own fault) the insurance company will need you to pay the first £250 and they will then pay for the rest of the repair.

If another driver crashes into you and the fault lies with that other driver then his insurance should cover your excess...you may still have to pay the excess...i don't know for sure as this has never happened to me.

So be absolutely sure that an excess being quoted is something you can and will be able to afford if you crash your car.

To explain further ......I claimed for a damaged wing mirror when it had been knocked off my previous car. The wing mirror cost £300 to replace and fit, and I claimed my insurance company. I was asked by my insurance to pay £100 (the excess)and they paid the other £200. So you see simply paying an insurance policy is not the end of it.

Ask your insurance broker to explain how it works and make sure you understand....and your parents understand.

If any other posters can explain policy excess better please do so , as I've only ever made one claim in 20 years and that was for a wing mirror !!

No idea for your age and inexperience........but if I were you would ASK and LISTEN very carefully when getting an insurance quote.

I've heard of policy excess being £500...........so I'd not be surprised if it were more

I think usually it's about £450 compulsary for under 21's, if you want the premium to go down, you can add upto about £700 voluntary, but some companies won't allow voluntary excess under 21.
