OK, i finally decided my new car will be a Civic Sport ... thats official ...
BUT ... i need to choose between 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel some info on me : live in belgium (max speed topped at 120 km/h), annualy i drive about 14.000 km .... at first i was pretty convinced about the diesel version, but when making the calculation (taxes, ...) i think the petrol version will be better for me, since i dont drive long distances often (maybe this will change though, to show my civic what do you guys think?? i need to order the car on monday, so any help would be great !! |

In terms of cost the diesel only makes sense if you do long distance driving, in time the reduced fuel costs will offset the initial higher purchase price.
In everything else (other than the noise stakes) the diesel wins hand down. I bought it purely for the power and the way it drives. |

Here in Turkey, the approximate break-even mileage is about 50000 km (30000 mi.) annual. Petrol is about 17% more expensive than diesel fuel. (our fuel prices are about 1,70€/lt for petrol and 1.45€/lt for diesel---I guess we are using the most expensive fuel in the world!) Including servicing costs etc., the calculation ends up with such a mileage over here..
Just wondered, how are such comparison figures for break-even mileages in other countries? |

I had the same quandry as you regarding petrol v diesel. I chose petrol due to the fact that during my search for a new car I spoke to.....wait for it..... a very unhelpful toyota salesman whilst I was looking at the Rav4. Whilst he looked at me and my wife as if we were something on the bottom of his shoe he did talk a little bit of sense. He told us that there would be no visible benefit in buying a diesel if you did only 30,000km a year max.
So when considering the Civic I asked the honda salesman about it and he confirmed the same message. Plus I have to say when I drove the cars I loved the sound of the petrol! |

Petrol Pros:
the sound is better than the diesel its cheaper to buy Diesel Cons: you can remap it to 180-190 bhp low down grunt Pottsy did a thread somewhere about how to work out which is cheaper in the long run, which included price of fuel, road tax and servicing For me, diesel works out cheaper anyway (25-30K miles per year), but even if it hadn't I would have gone diesel anyway |

As helpful as everyone is on Civinfo, you need to take both cars out on a test drive!
Certainly, the price premium for the diesel might not be worth it if you mainly drive short distances (and only 14,000km per year). But then again, you might prefer the increased torque of the diesel, or the refined nature of the i-Vtec (at low/medium revs). So, if you can, do your calculations and then try both on Monday. And, if you do go for the diesel, try to get get a decent discount to offset the higher sticker price (although you should also be aiming for a saving on the petrol version too). |

I am very happy with my petrol - but then I haven´t driven the diesel as it is not available here...
Modern diesels are very nice, and the remap possibilty to "Type D" spec is valuable imo. As the others say - test drive both as much as possible. |

wow allready 12 replies in half a day, civinfo people are superb !!!
i think for me the main issue is budget wise i was just wondering what you would recommend me (i allready test drove both 2.2 diesel and 1.8i petrol, and liked the diesel better, seemed like a smoother car) .... knowing that : - i mostly take short trips from here to work ('bout 15 km) - take sometimes longer ones (bout 100-160km per trip) during weekends - yearly average is around 14000 km - yearly taxes for a diesel is about 45% more, insurance wise (since its 2.2) also quite a bit more expensive ... i just wonder, taking all costs (purchase and yearly) into account, what would be better option for me? |

If cost is an issue, I would personally go with the petrol. I drive about the same as you do and I am quite unsure if I would have spent the extra money on the 2.2 if it was available for me. But I would realistically prefer a 2.2 with a 190 bhp chip over a Type-R due to cost and practicallity. |

decision with your head = petrol
decision with your heart = diesel Its a tough choice, becuase if you buy the petrol, you will always be wonderring if perhaps you should have stretched that bit more for the diesel. But if you buy the diesel, you'll be thinking of the money you could have saved... (Actually, if you buy the diesel, you'll be too busy But no - for the distance you are doing, and if budget is tight, then petrol probably is the more sensible choice |

The debate will go on for a long time, only you know what is best for you and the only way to work that out is to drive them both.

Hi i'm from belgium and now driving an 1.8 petrol ,have had 2.2 diezel with dpf and not happy with it ,i could not do enough long distance and thats what it needs to get clean . So when you do much short distance it will get dirty very quickly and less power is what happens next and a thirsty engine .
