Unhappy Ordered used car and signed - can I back out?

I've just paid a £500 deposit on a 2.2 Sport (12k miles just under £14000) but am having second thoughts. I don't think I got a particularly good deal, only getting 6 months road tax free and I'm having to pay £440 for parking sensors!

I'm also not getting as much as I wanted for my part exchange and in hindsight have realised I should have gone to a few other dealers to see if they offered anything better first. Especially as I was also thinking about a Toyota Auris and might have been able to play Toyota off against Honda and vice versa.

If I back out now, will the dealer go mad and will I definitely lose the deposit? I don't really want to lose £500 but then I might be able to make that back on getting a better part exchange price.

I did really enjoy the test drive though...

Deposit

You should get it back no problems. I paid a similar deposit a few years ago on a Citroen C2 and changed my mind. Dealer tried to block me but a raised voice in a busy Saturday showroom ended that and the card was credited on next working day. £14000 seems a lot: shop around and yes play dealers including Honda v Honda and Toyota v Honda off. It's your money. A deposit simply prevents a dealer selling the car to someone else. Good luck.

£14K seems about ball park price - what year is it?

the extra 6 months road tax is what £60, £70?
£440 does seem steep for the sensors though.

What are you part ex-ing, how much did you want, and how close did they get?

Don't think you would have got very far playing off against an Auris

At the end of the day, I would imagine the deposit is gone
Though I wouldn't worry about them getting mad

You now have 2 choices (3 if you include grovelling!)

1) put it out of your mind, and look forward to the Civic
2) frantically spend the next few days trying to find a deal which saves you at least £500, and going for that instead

either way, I'd seriously consider asking them not to bother with the sensors at that price...

Thanks for the replies. I did ask to cancel the sensors but they said they'd already been ordered. Wish I'd not done an impulse buy and had come and read on here a bit more first.

It's an 06 and I was part exchanging a 02 Corolla, which admittedly had a big dent in it. I was hoping for a bit more than 2600, maybe 3000+ as I paid 5500 sept 05.

Where I signed after paying the deposit states "I agree to deposit the non-refundable sum of 500 and to pay the balance etc." So I guess there's no way of backing out of that.

'06 2.2 Sport at Avonvale for £14.4 with 12,600 miles
Find 2006 06 Honda Civic 2.2 i-Ctdi Sport Diesel on eBay within, Honda, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 03-Nov-07 06:49:06 GMT)

or 14K miles for £14K
Find 2006 06 Honda Civic 2.2 i-Ctdi Sport Diesel on eBay within, Honda, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 05-Nov-07 06:37:20 GMT)

some a bit cheaper, but with more miles, some more expensive with less miles.

so I guess your £14K is about right - maybe even a few hundred £ on the cheap side.
Which might go towards offsetting the part-ex.

It'd be the sensors that grated - I'd have another go on them - it's not like they won't be able to put them on someone else's civic.
Might even go as far as offering £20 not to have them

Couldn't you get a quote from another honda dealer for the sensors and if it's significantly cheaper, ask your dealer why they're making you pay so much? Or maybe get them to send the sensors back and offer to pay any costs? You'd think they'd at least TRY to help.

I've priced up parking sensors with my local dealer who have told me that they are £ 425.00 fitted and that is a fixed national price.

I've priced up sensors with my local dealer and they have quoted £ 425.00 fitted which apparently is a national fitted price. On accessories, the price should be the same at any Honda dealer you go into, although you maybe able to barter some discount.

I left a £100 deposit on a pre-registered civic at a Honda dealer and then changed my mind the next day. A refund cheque was with me three days later! I think you should be able to get your deposit back, and even if you have signed something you normally have about seven days to cancel.

I think the stealer didn't want to cancel the sensors as it would affect his commission. I did actually have to barter to get the price down to 440. It was 480 originally which he said was "Trade price". He must have seen me coming...

I'll ring another dealer now.

Yup, spoke to another dealer and sure enough £425. Going to try get in touch with customer services about why the sales person told me £480 was trade price, I feel misled...

Anyone got any tips on how I should ring the dealer to complain about this? They have already ordered the sensors and might have started fitting them. So must be entitled to keep the deposit I have paid them?

On the other hand, I feel the salesman shouldn't have said that around £480 is the price they pay themselves when other dealers are doing sensors to the public at £425.

I would go onto Honda Uk's website and print off the fitted price and present to your dealer while asking for an explantion why they are charging more than other Honda dealers. I would then ask them that if they don't at least drop them to the national price, you will pull out of the deal.
Me thinks Honda customer relations may also be interested with this.
P.s the parking sensors already come colour coded from Honda

maybe if you have printed proof that he is overcharging you, you can go on the "lost faith" in the dealership, i.e. if they are going to overcharge on the fitment they may overcharge on everything else to extract every penny they can get from you. I would say I was disapointed that they did not make it clear the price I was paying was over and above other main dealers so you request your deposit back, it's worth a try.

i bet your sensors are not genuine as they come colour coded as standard.

I am sorely tempted to drive over to HoldCroft Honda and get one of their Sports. They have one with around 4000 less miles than the one I am getting and it is £500 less as well. That plus the £440 I won't be spending on parking sensors would make up for the money I might lose on the deposit.

I'm giving Honda customer services a call on Monday to query where I stand regarding being misled by salesman.

Do people generally buy their cars from their local dealer, where they will go for servicing, or does it not matter too much?
