[Part ex] Part EX offers
Hi kids,
I was wondering if any of you had part ex'd your cars (i have searched but couldnt find any threads)? I may be looking at changing the civic and the 2 garages I have been to have both said they can only give me £9,000 - £9,500 for mine, although it is a 2006 (on 55 plate) with 23k miles i think this is very low, what are your thoughts/experiences on this? Any offers that you have had would be good to know. Thanks Andrea |

April 2006 EX with 11,000 miles. Offered £12,500 today. Quite a steep hit depreciation wise, although looking at second hand forecourt prices, Civics not holding up too well. I expect I can get another £200-£300 more from them. What Car reckon 48% on 3yr old 36k mile car which looks a bit optimistic at present

Hi
I've px/d three cars in the last twelve months, including my 2.2 ES,all to main dealers. My experiences have been that they all seem to come in with the same offer price. Those dealers not a franchise of the car I had, put the car on a dealers' website to get the offer price that they, themselves could move the car on for. My room for manouvre has been in getting a discount off the car I was interested in,the issue in question being the cost to make the change. That is the figure I've always used with the salesman. To get a picture of the figures involved,I'd go round/phoned round a number of dealers.Once I'd got a representative figure of the px value, visited the dealer with the car I wanted and negotiated.Once the dealer knew I was serious about buying,I've been able to get a very good deal.My purchases were S/H or pre-reg. which perhaps allows for more price bartering to take place |

I got 2 diff values way off from one another from 2 diff garages, but same company. Both were well off the mark.
The salesman I bought my car from looked rather puzzled when I told him that the other dealership had only offered £5,000 for my cooper S. I ended up selling mines private and got a darn site more. How long you got to sell it? Cause that could be a decider too. |

If you go private be careful ( there are one or two dodgy folk around nowadays)
Having looking on Whatcar they reckon £10260ish and Parkers was just under the £10000 If you are changing manufacturer you will take a hit compared to Buying another Honda I disagree with Hartside the Civic is holding it's value very well whatcar say that a std1.8se civic will be worth 48% of it original value after 3 years so working on todays prices a new car no extras is worth £ 14,927 and in three years it will be worth £7,165 ( although most dealers will sweeten the deal it is unlikely anyone would be offered such a low price unless it had done a high mileage and not been looked after) Some BUT NOT ALL of the add on's will add some extra value to the car i,e metallic paint, fog lights, leather, but others will not which makes your valuation of £9500 not all that bad Andrea - just push them for a little more A new car always falls hard in its first two years less in the third an so on |

![]() £6000 in 17 months is quite a drop, even allowing for the fact that it gets hit hard in the first 2 years. Some how I don't think it will only lose a further £3600 in the next 19 months! |

The simple maths above does not lie All cars take a HUGE hit in the first two years and it is generally recognized as financial suicide to sell a car under three years old because of the drop Honda's & VW's hold their values far better than Ford's, Nissans, Renault's Peugeot's, Mazda's the list goes on Just to prove my point ( not that I need to - but ) for example a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Acenta 2wd value £ 14999 when new will be worth as little as £ 5999 in three years time ( a few more pounds that a 1.8 SE civic when new but it looses more money in the end) Just think what you would be loosing if you had bought a Ford Focus 1.6 100 Style value when new £ 14972 could be worth as little as £5240 in three years time ( yet another reason not to buy a ford ) |

For example I bought a brand new two litre Ford Focus Zetec in year 2000 (one of the best cars I have owned I might add!) , list £15,600. I actually paid £12,000 for it and traded it two years later for £7,000. Against list that is a massive hit, but against actual that's as acceptable as it gets. You try to get that sort of discount from a Honda dealer! Simple maths are that actual loss on a car with higher retain value can amount to more than actual loss on a car of lower ![]() |

I think you meant: "Doesn't prove anything at all as you never, ever buy a Ford" Also, I would not buy any car at list price, but I agree that some brands probably can get you more discount than others. |

So Andrea,
I bet you glad you asked the question I think the answer is you should get a little more around the 10,000 mark ( make sure the car is Sparkling and try another dealer) The other thing that may make your trade in value look slightly low is if a dealer is discounting the new car by quite a bit ( your not buying a ford (cough, spit) are you? )Do let us know how you get on |

Thanks ever so much for the replies peeps, I have been looking at a Fiesta but this is due to having to decrease outgoings on my car for personal reasons.
I have got time to sell it privately as we have 2 other cars but as someone said, there are dodgy people out there and i wouldnt have a clue where to start. There are some scratches on the car and the last dealer i spoke to said it can take £300 off the price (fair enough but i thought i would still get more than 9k for it even with that £300 taken off!) I will keep you updated Cheers again |

Z4
I thought I'd got a good price on a new Z4 when I bought it for £25,800 in March this year, against a list price of almost £29,000.
It had all the 'recommended' options for getting the best resale value, and I took it out on a 3 year PCP that guaranteed a minimum £14,000 after 3 years/36K miles. This sounded like a great deal, and I could not lose more than £11,600 (after discounting road tax) in 3 years. Unfortuately, after 5 months, I couldn't cope any longer with the hard ride and the effect if was having on my back, getting in and out. The best offer I could get for the car cash (at only 5 months old, unmarked, and 6,000 miles) was £19,500, losing £1 for every mile I had driven! I was offered £21K to 'down-trade' against the SGT, so maybe got about £20K in real terms for the Z4. So the car lost about £6,000 in 5 months, and could have lost no more than another £5,600 in the next 31 months! This just shows how cars lose loads in the first year. The effect is even more horrific if you compared the trade in value against the £29K list price! And the Z4 is supposed to hold it's value well! I've also lost loads on 2 other BMW's traded in inside 2 years. My Audi TT did much better though, and previous Honda's have not done too badly. My CRV lost £11K in 40 months and 59,000 miles - not too bad I think. Last edited by HumberMart : 30th October 2007 at 10:24. |
