Speeding up paying by debit card

I pick up my first ever Civic, or Honda for that matter today. For my only other car purchase, I paid by debit card which needed authorisation by talking to the bank while in the dealer which took ages.

Does anyone know if I can call the bank beforehand to say I will be making a large purchase, so saving time in the dealer?

Yep I have bought 2 cars on debit cards both times I phoned the Bank a few days before and told them how much would be going through and the company that would be taking it. On one occasion they actually didn't take the money for 2 weeks.

I would take the fact that you have had to speak to the bank as a good thing as it shows their security is working.

I have bought a car in the past with my debit card and had five or so minute call to the bank.

I didn't mind one bit as it showed me they were on the ball. I think I'd have minded more if they hadn't wanted to do a security check with me.

I paid for mine via debit, phone number appeared on the handset, dealer called it and verified its was all above board, took less than 5 minutes. No call queue or anything straight through to a real person not a fricking push 1, push 2, computer. Thats was with One Account, which I have to say are bloody excellent.

I used my Visa Debit from my nationwide account and it went through just like I was buying my shopping. Salesman was all set to phone and get authorisation but it went through without a hitch!

Were you using a Debit Card and not a Switch card? I know with Switch they always get you to phone for major purchases

Same here Angie!! The salesman was shocked!! I have to say I think I'd have been a little happier if he'd have to call for clearance... so much for my bank keeping a watchful eye over my account for unusual transactions!!

It only took a few minutes after all, though I nearly forgot my password!

Very happy with my new 2.2 Sport so far and the dealer was good too, so very happy with Honda right now.

Me too, the salesman nearly fell out of his chair when he processed my card.
'I was expecting to call the bank' he said, totally bemused

I paid with my HSBC debit card, the usual chip and pin job and it went straight through no problems.

Paid for mine with my debit card. I called the bank the previous day just in case, but they said as long as the funds were there it wasn't necessary. Had no problem.
