Urgent help required for new Civic buyer.

Hi Everybody,

Just about to take delivery of my new Civic 2.2 diesel sport and have just started panicking at the last minute as a fried has just told me she has had a lot of problem with hers. The most worrying thing she mentioned was the handbrake did not hold when she parked it on a hill and the car rolled back and nearly hit a kid. She also mentioned that the bottom back window leaked and went foggy as well as her clutch having to be replaced after 6 months as the garage found a major fault with it!! Talk about putting the dampener on things just before I get it!!

Any help/advice or experiences would be great to help me decide if I should still get it or not would be great.

Cheers

Some cars do have some issues, much the same with any make of car.
Most Honda dealers are pretty good at sorting them out eventually.
Get the car and enjoy it like most people on here.

Cheers,

Terry

Always leave your car in gear when parked on a hill. The discs shrink slightly as they cool which means that even though when first parked the pads are gripping, they lose grip over time. This happens to all cars with disc breaks all round. My Accord liked to roll of the drive if not parked in gear as my drive slopes.
A leaking back window is not something I have come across on this forum before, but I am sure that someone will tell me I am wrong. Not heard of any clutch problems either, that could be down to bad driving as much as the car.

The car is great and although there are a few niggling faults, most of which are well documented on this site, the vast majority of people on here love their Civics and wouldn't swap for anything else.

You will be most impressed by the torque and low down grunt of the diesel, once run in it just pulls increadibly smoothly throughout the rev range.

Thank for the help, I know most makes of cars will have a few one off problem cars but just wanted to make sure it is not a common occourance. Glad you seem to be enjoying yours at least.

Thanks Topcat,

I have had a look on there but I wanted to get an idea of what everybody thinks about it. If I read all of the reviews on there I would probably shoot myself

The thing is some will say there are problems and some will say that their car is the most perfect car in the entire universe

Had I known 21 months ago what I know now I probably would not have bought it, having said that if I were to trade mine in now what would I buy? I would always look at other civics and wish that I was still driving one !!

Its a gamble you have to take im sure it will be fine

If it helps, there's a good list of common faults listed on this site. I printed it off and took it with me when I went to collect my car. It's a great pre-delivery check-list.

Actually, my dealer was more than happy for me to work my way through it. It also gave him the opportunity to point out that he'd setup the radio, trip computer, etc. for me earlier that morning.

Good luck!

When you put the handbrake on give it a real good tug... I always do and never had a problem, also means my girlfriend can't drive the car as she can never get the handbrake off!

Handbrake letting loose has happened to a number of owners, so it is always good practise to leave it in gear.

HOWEVER, the (vast) majority of owners have not reported this as a fault which they can even make happen, let alone happen by itself.

Leaking rear window - new to me, although some rear hatches have been known to need adjusting, so that could be where it was coming from. Easy fix if it does happen

As to the clutch - also the first I've heard of that one on a Civic.

Check out the survey results - the figures do speak volumes

There are a few owners who have most definately got some (or several) issues with their particular Civic.
There are also a lot of owners who have no issues at all

I've got into the habit of pressing down on the handbrake lever once applied.
I know the discs can shrink but my impression is that the lever is becoming un-latched and dropping down.

Dont ask TC will you.
She has had endless problems with hers but the majority of owners have had none or very few!!

Yes, there are a few faults, as with most cars, but the rest of the experience makes up for it.

Well there are obviously a few problems but I think I am going to go for it as I really love the car and haven't seen anything else I like better, and I might be worrying over nothing! I'll just make sure I leave it in gear too like you said Honda 100, Thanks for all your advice. Fingers crossed I don't get as many problems as you Topcat!!
