Exterior Door Handle Lights

My fiancee has just bought a BMW 1-series and its got a nifty little gizmo whereby when the car is unlocked the exterior door handles shine lights down the door so you can see where they are in the dark.

Anybody done a mod for the Civic, it would look great!?

Thats a rather nice feature. I'd love this coupled with the remote mirror folding mod and 'coming home lights'.

Someone should open up the Honda equivalent of Awesome GTI and do this stuff...

They are called "puddle" lights ! definitely not to help you find the door handle

There is a similar thingie with my wife's Citroen C4, not @ the door handles but you can switch on the main light by remote for a minute or so. Can be very useful sometimes, as can be "homing lights".

Granted thats a point, but I'm not interested in it for practicality, I'm interested in it because it looks cool and is a little bit different! I was thinking it would be good on the civic to illuminate the "wells" of the door handles both front and rear.

I guess all that would be needed is to link it to the overhead map lights???

My dad's Range Rover Vogue has them set into the door mirrors, this may be easier to accomplish than the Handles??

Hartside has just mentioned that to me when I bumped into him, could be a better option but would be very nervous about drilling into the side mirrorss, breaking them and having to fork out over £200 for a new housing.

Is definitely worth careful consideration though!

Well, the wholes don't have to be huge, you could use the LED bit from a cheap torch? that would only be about 1.5-2 cm across. Also you could try on some knackered ones, just ask your local dealer if the get any in for replacement could you have one or two of the less knackered ones, maybe offering some cash (5-10 pounds) for their christmas box???? Then you could see how it goes without endangering your ones.

Hmm, good idea Tom, the car is in for a service in a month so I might just ask then! Is the mirror glass easy to take off?

Shouldn't be too difficult, my old BMW had fancy things in it's door mirror and that was fairly easy to remove, just had to 'ping' it from 4 clips.

If it's plastic it shouldn't be too difficult, but if it's fibreglass it may be a bit tricky (very tough and needing extra care not to crack it, I would use a bore/plug cutter and start it with a very small pilot hole and just expand that).
