Motorway Gritters

Hi, I went home for the weekend on friday and when travelling back last night I was behind a gritter on the motorway and have lots and lots of salt on my car. As I am at university I have no way of cleaning my civic until I get home for easter, will the salt do any damage to the paint (NHB)? Cheers

I know students are not made of money but can you not use one of those washer bays at your local garage. Like a power hose slot machine.
Yes, do think you need to wash the salt off or else the NHB might not stay NHB!!

Hi lleyton...

Get that car washed ASAP... Road salt gives your car cancer...!!

Hot soapy water and a good rinse is the only answer get it done NOW...!! Avoid being anywhere near a gritter lorry there EVIL..!!

Gritters, and any lorry after gritting, are prime cause of stone chipping. Stay away from them.

It's the b-ggers coming in the opposite direction that you are at the mercy of.
I'm sure they turn the speader wheel up to full volume, when they see me coming.

Chuck a bucket of water over it at least.
It will dissolve the salt.

Cambridge, right, was gonna say if you were nearer, pop round and use my hose if your really desperate...... not an open offer guys, just one student to another I take payment with pot-noodles and or pasta .

I was also going to say, look for a place locally, there are a few around (as a last resort a brushless wash in an auto is better than nothing).. but as the guys say, even a bucket or a few jugs of water poured over will remove at least some of the salt, I use a garden weedkiller sprayer bottles (they do 2 for 5 pounds at B&Q) one with 'car wash' in it, like diluted Autoglym engine bay cleaner (it's a great degreaser and road salt/tar remover, also being slightly acidic will neutralise the Alkilinity of the salt) or shampoo, the other can with clean soapy water in, at least you can get the salt off, even if you can't enter a 'concours de course'.

ATB,
Tom

I found a local garage with a pressure spray machine and it gives 3 minutes for a pound. Even just a 3 minute pressure wash rinse would help a lot and at a quid you can't complain. 3 mins is perfectly enough for a quick once over. For two you could do 3 mins of shampoo followed by 3 mins rinse.

Just been to Shell and got the thing jet washed for £7. Expensive but worth it, my car hasn't been washed since the start of the Christmas holidays! Cheers for the advice guys!
