In reality does this happen and do the auto wipers still come on.

It doesn't seem to stop the auto wipers working properly. I don't know whether they sense the droplets on the glass or actually hitting the glass. I can't get it to stop smearing now I have applied it to the windscreen whichever technique I try to apply it. Any ideas how to get it off?

It's done optically, with an infrared sensor.

How many of you have used Rain-X (or other brands) on the rear lower plastic part of the screen?

Is it safe as Rain-X and other brands state not to use it on plastic!

Does it make any difference or doesn't the airflow help on the lower screen?

I personally would not use the product on anything except the rear glass section of window, or the mirrors.

Long term damage to the plastic section would not be immediately obvious, it could make it brittle in years to come. I wouldn't risk it.

That part of the rear window has not really caused me any issues. I did notice on a long, wet motorway stint recently that it had collected a little road grime on the plastic part, but not enough to worry about. The rear window did not have a single drop of water on it the whole time, despite being in heavy rain!
It was impressive, actually. I had been pulled up in the rain to eat lunch, where some water had begun to settle on the rear window, got onto the motorway, and within seconds, the rear window was bone-dry! Amazing!

I've used rainx and now some stuff made by diamondbrite (can't remember what it's called at the minute!) on cars past and present and I've always found it extremely useful.

I wouldn't dare put it on the lower section of the rear window though!

Damian

p.s. Apply lightly & evenly with a cloth or sponge all over glass. allow to dry then reapply. Allow to dry to a haze. Use a fine water mist to dampen the glass and gently polish with a dry paper towel to remove the haze.

I think the reason these products should not to be used on the plastic windows is due to them all being 'petroleum' based - so that the fluid flashes off.

I was going to use wax but believe this too is 'petroleum' based?

Has anyone used this product from Meguairs - on the plastic section of rear window, plus front & rear lenses?

Appears to be only a cleaner/restorer as opposed to a water dispersal agent?

If you want to repel water try waxing the lens, just as good as any water dispersal agent and cheaper.
You can wax all glass except for the front screen.

Cheers Johnd
I've found wax very effective on my m'bike helmet - didn't use it on the visor! (Waxed and polished it so much it slipped through my hands onto the concrete floor ).

Plenty of bottles of turtle wax lying around I'll give it a try.

I've used the Halfords version of RainX on my current car (BMW - goes next month for a shiny red EX) and the wifes Civic.

On all the side glass and mirrors it's very effective.
I did try the windscreen on my car and found that above 40mph the screen was nice and clear without any wipers. Around town/low speed though you need wipers and this causes streaking. It also erodes the repellent finish away.

All said and done though driving at 70mph in the pouring rain on the motorway without wipers is quite something to behold, particularly passengers reactions.
