Question Waterless Cleaning

Question for the Detailing Gurus:

Are there any products/methods known or recommended for waterless cleaning of my exterior?

The area of Aus that I live in has been in what is technically termed a drought for the past year or two. We get plenty of rain (as a matter of fact it only just stopped raining) but not in the right places to fill the Dams...

As a result we labour under "Level 6 Water Restrictions" which means that I cannot even use water from a bucket to wash my car.

I am loathe to allow someone else, like a hand car wash joint, to wash it for fear of swirls and there is no way in creation that it is going anywhere NEAR an autowash...

This leaves me with 2 options:
  1. Wash it in the middle of the night and hope no one sees me and dobs me in.
  2. Find a GOOD method of doing an essentially waterless wash.
1 bucket of water would be OK but I can't do anything that requires me to rinse it either before or after...

Suggestions???

-H

Difficult one that, are there not joints that allow you to wash your car using their facilities like the US have??????????? I wouldn't contemplate Waterless cleaning (unless you absolutely have to!) as it will in all likelyhood drag grit and dirt across your paintwork and scratch it, especially in dusty Aus. have you considered washing it in the rain?????? or is using rain water from a butt allowed like here???

Tom

BTW, in Aus are there still no limits in the North?????

It's a pitty we don't have waterless products in Greece, as we have tha same problem with Australia. And it will get worse as the years go by. In a few years we'll have the same climate with Egypt as the scientists say. That means plus 4-5 degrees in the summer, mid temperatures will be 41 in June !

I'd take the risk of stealth night washing!
How about using bottled water?

i wish it was warmer in britain. we dont get a summer anymore just rain. we should bottle it and sell it to you guys, as car use only. then you could clean your civics.

Less and less every year...

There are still some roads in the Northern Territory that are technically no limit - but you wouldn't want to take a civic on most of them - they have a naturally imposed speed limit due to the fact that they are so c**p...

Depending on the time of year I quite often wash mine in the rain.

Saves a lot of time.

Initial rinse is automatic, as it the final rinse. Neighbours must think I'm mad out there with my waterproofs on with a large bucket of car wash & wax and a large carwash brush.

There has been a product on the shopping channels called Spray & Shine, but as mentioned above, it must introduce scratching from the embedded grit ?

You could try a product called Spray and Shine. We have had numerous threads about it on this site. I know a lot of my friends use it and think it is brilliant. The general opinion on here is that it would possibly scratch your paintwork as no water is involved. You can get it from a company called Greased Lightning, I think they have a web site or the number is 08717 123456. Must be good as when I rang they had sold out as it was their most popular product. I think that if you put Spray and Shine in a search engine you should find it. I remember on one of the threads Angie 04 said her dad used it on his BMW and said it was good. Hope this helps

According to Tesco price check you can buy a 5ltr bottle of AQUA PURA STILL WATER 5L for 67 pence. Regardless of any restrictions you have on the use of tap water I am sure that no one can stop you from using bottled water in any way you choose.

OK it might sound a bit strange but if you fill up your kettle and warm some of the water up, you should be able to wash down your car with a single bottle, 2 if you want to give a good rinse.

Keep your receipts and if anyone reports you, show them the receipts and tell them to bugger off.

No doubt if your sensible and don't go washing it every day, then it shouldn't be a problem if your careful, perhaps early evening might be best????

Got me some of this: http://www.meguiars.com.au/productdetail_2006.php?seq=92&category=CAR%20CARE& subcat=Paint%20Care&subsubcat=Wash%20and%20Maintai n&show=1

Tried it in the door sill. Doesn't seem to scratch and gives a REALLY nice finish.

I wouldn't use it to wash the car obviously but I think it will come in handy to keep it looking spiffy and reduce the frequency of washing...

Invest in a whack of Meg's Last Touch, and split it 50:50 with deionised water.
This will work as a waterless wash.
Make sure any towels used are a very fluffy 70:30 microfibre, to reduce the risk of scratching or micro-marring.
