Painting the brake calipers

At some point of browsing I saw a few threads for painting the Brake calipers with Hammerite. Has anyone tried this and if so will it last, or will the paint start to come off???

I painted the calipers and drums on my Mark 1 Focus with Hammerite when I had it. Rust started to come through on the drums after about 2 years but the calipers were fine.

Did you have to primer the calipers first?

Nope. Just gave them a good clean and applied a couple of coats as per Hammerite instructions.

Didn't Hammerite used to advertise with the saying ' No undercoat, No primer, No rust '
Something like that anyway.

Yup

Yes the advert went like that but it's not quite true. I once tried to paint my railing outside around the house and a few months latter RUST. So this is the reason why I'm asking. Better safe than sorry

Talking But don't they get ever so slightly hot?

As brake calipers get hot - wouldn't the high temperature paint be a better bet?

If Hammerite lasts for 2 years I doubt high temp paint is necessary - or aren't you really working those brakes???

(.......grenade!!!)

Gold it is............

Must say the gold looks very appealing - think I will go down that 'subtle' path. It's similar to what they were when new (if memory serves!!!!) and is very nice.

Gold HT Paint: Stove Bright High Temp Paint - Gold

Can't comment on this make as well as availability (US site) but the brand I used many years ago was supposed to work on exhausts and lasted only weeks!

Last edited by Miggins; 5th May 2008 at 20:44. Reason: Gold details - in the right entry this time!!!
