Stone chip damage or have i been Keyed?

Didnt know how to tell the difference - is the damage on bonnet here consistent with stone chips damage or has someone maliciously keyed the spaceship?

Also any advice on getting it repaired? Chips Away? Bonnet Respray? Yay or Nay, what say you? Any cost estimate?

Also the mrs has kerbed my lovely 18" oz canovas - is there a way to fix these? I've been quoted 80 quid a wheel (2 have been kerbed) but the chap said all 4 would have to go in as theyre laquered up...

Any advice kindly appreciated

pic 1 scratch about 4cm long
pic 2 scratch about 2cm long
pic 3 chipped to white underneath paint. Biggest chip runs 4cm long.

The first two pictures don't look like stone damage to me. Not too sure about the third picture.

thanks dimply, at least now i know what stone chip damage doesnt looks like now...i have absolutely no idea how it could have been caused, i just hope it wasnt malicious...

If anyone sees the 3rd pic, can you let me know if youve seen stone chip damage like this?

Just thinking of best way to repair this damage and the kerbed alloys too....

I agree, those first 2 look more like someone has put something on the bonnet with a sharp edge.

A deliberate key would be worse

kremmen thanks, im shocked a bit as ive only had the car 6 months and ive been ultra careful, certainly no objects were ever laid on the bonnet by me or the mrs.

The spaceship does go in once a week for a car wash by hand. Could this damage be consistent with a water jet hose pipe thingy?

Looks like something has been placed on the bonnet and dragged off. Stone chips appear like this.

HTH.

Noooooooo! don't let anyone else do your car. They could be lance marks as its a quick in and out for the washing people.

and there you may have the answer - car wash by hand (other people?).

Do they use those blade thingys to wash off the excess water ? Even a small object caught in the chamois.

I clean mine myself with utmost care. Very light use of a Vileda Window Cloth for the worst followed by a Meguirs Water Magnet.

To fix you are going to need some touchup and a very fine brush.

Just as an aside, I notice you have loads of very fine scratches on the first 2 photos, they are normally caused by over agressive use of a dry chamois or the like, or aggresively polishing the car after dust has been allowed to settle overnight.

Or just not cleaning the Mitts out that they scour your car with.

Kremmen and Stella, thanks, I'll be investing time in learning the art of detailing from now on...It must be due to the washing with jets or someone keying the bonnet...

Stella thanks also for the shot of the chips - that doesnt look good at all... so now i know wot chips damage looks like. Do you think my pic 3 is "chip damage?"

Does anyone think ChipsAway is the way to go? I wouldnt feel confident enough to do it myself, i might make it worse...

I disagree - by looking at the swirl marks near the scratches, I put the marks down to rushed cleaning.

How pitted are scratches 1 & 2?

Alan, its not as pitted as Stella's above, but you can certainly see the white marks underneath.I'm not sure, but im thinking it might be consistent with misuse of a water jet hose by the hand car wash guys? Most of my neighbours are OAP's theyre unlikely to be up to much vandalising. Here's a closer view

Or it could be someone with a zipped top has brushed against your car and dragged a line. Normally stone chips are usually in a straight line, I've never seen one suddenly change direction. What would it be changing direction with?

Has anybody (washing your car) leant against wearing a pair of jeans? the studs on the pockets could do that.

bucketp, where i go theres a team of 6 guys doing the job. I try to go when its not too busy. But its next to impossible to be absolutely vigilant while theyre doing the job. It could well be studs, never thought of it.

All i want now is to get it back to factory spec (somehow) and learn the art of detailing so i never have to rely on outside washers again. Its my own fault for prefering convenience i guess...

I strongly suspect that similar scratches on my side panel were caused by my own stupid fault, leaning against the side to clean the roof with a zipped jacket . Having said that, I did feel a lot better that way round than if I had felt someone had keyed it.

I think anyone making an effort to key it would have made far worse scratches.

The chips are a different matter. Something has hit the paint rather harder, either stones or, as suggested, an 'unrubbered' end of a lance.
