Exclamation Help with gear knob!

Anybody know how to take off the gear knob in a Type R
The only advice I've been given is that it will unscrew; but not a chance in hell. I've tried by hand, by pliers and even with mull grips, but nothing works. Any help would be grately received.

It should unscrew, obviously your has been thread-locked on with some Loctite.

If you've had mole-grips on it, it must be scratched by now, so it has got to come off.

Try tightening it a fraction then try to undo it

Do you have a set of stilsons. They should get it off, but they will wreck it.

Standard Stilsons only £5.99 - Buy Online or Call 0800 310 2852

Forgive me for posting a picture, if you know what they are, but obviously not everyone does.

Well I might have to get some stilsons. Don't mind messing up the old gear knob, fitting a Skunk2 gear knob (that's if I can get this bleeder off). Thanks for the advice Dimplyred.

See if you can borrow some good ones, they will grip onto it, but as I say they will make a mess of it.

I believe you can get a cream for it though.

Again forgive me if you already know this, you are trying to unscrew it anti-clockwise, aren't you?

I assume you are but I thought I'd mention it.

Underneath the silver gear knob there is a black metal ring that locks up against the bottom of the gear knob itself. if you are turning this part anti-clockwise you are tightening it NOT loosening as it is not connected to the gearknob. put your grips on the ring and turn CLOCKWISE at the same time turn the silver gearknob ANTICLOCKWISE. hope that helps.

Cheers R GT. that did the trick!
Thanks everyone for all the advice. Job done and the skunk2 gear knob works a treat. I'd even say that it goes in gear a lot easier and better now...

If your old gear knob is still relatively unscathed, you could sell it for good money. The Type R gearknob is a popular item.
