Spraying pearlescent finish

Hello,

I'm foolishly trying to respray my royal blue bumper myself, it doesn't look too bad but I want to add the lacquer soon. With metallic, you 1200 grit sand the colour before applying the clearcoat, is this is the same with pearlescent finish?

If I get it wrong, I'll take it to the professionals!

Thanks

You don't sand the paint layer!
You only sand back the clearcoat to key it for the next layer.

If you do get it wrong I wouldn't bother with the professionals they are only £99 brand new, delivered and pre-painted.

Good luck with it though

Thanks,

I had some fun and games today, I thought I'd take the bumper off so I could work on it inside where I can control the environment. Try as I might I could not get it off, so I had it hanging (literally) off the car.

So then I just masked off the bit I wanted and sanded, primed and sprayed it. So far to good...but then it started to rain, which ruined the coat. I sanded it down again and tried and it looks ok, but when I went back to look it had run a bit, and then the rain started properly...

I spent ages getting it all back together in the rain, and had bits left over, so I had to take it all apart again and find out where those parts went.

It needs another sand back and more colour, then the clear coat but now that I've done it once I am happy with the method, its just the weather I'm waiting for now.

The dealer wanted £200 to spray the bumper.

Have a look at this, it shows you how to remove the front bumper.

No, I got those off, these were under the car. I took off all the bolts/screws/fasteners I could find but it was kind of hinged under the car somehow.

OK, I tried but I can't get a good finish.

The annoying thing is that I covered up the original scuff perfectly, but it dripped a bit on the top of the bumper so I had to sand it down and then could not get it smooth at all. I was sanding for about an hour and couldn't get it right. I'm quite pleased with myself for having a go, but I think I will just get a new bumper - its easier.

Ha ha
