My first big chip
I just noticed a big chip on the front left wing (NHB), it's a clean 5mm diam chip and am anxious to get it sorted. Wonder if anyone can advise me on the best way to deal with it. My guess is not a touchup stick since it would probably show?
Think I might have a few other chips, but haven't had close inspection yet. Should I go ask for a paint thickness check at the dealer? It it the sort of thing I can just ask for and they are obliged to do for free, even if I dont have multiple chips? Dont really have to want to wait and gather more evidence of chippage! |

I have chip-sticked a couple of smaller ones on my bonnet, and it isn't too bad. It is no where near as good as a proper job, but at least there are no big white patches looking at me. I have no plans to get any professional work done, it will only make me more upset at the next chip.
I wouldn't dismiss using it, even if only for a short while to better hide the mark. 'My first big chip' tickled me. I had to try hard to resist posting a picture of a big... well, chip. Photoshopped onto a wing of a civic, of course. I was not sure how that would have gone down, though. |

I have 9 stone chips on the bonnet (NHB), 9 months old, 9000 miles & asked the Dealer to check the thickness. He said it was 150 microns which is within tolerance & was thicker than a couple of CRVs that had just come in (100 microns). He said " Its just one of those things" ! Oh Joy!

Thanks for your advice people! I have managed to chill out about it a bit more now (despite having found 2 smaller ones!). Was p!55ed off when the transit cut me up at 60mph and I heard the stones in question hit the car. Dude, I hit that girly horn like there was no tomorrow
Sounds like ample chippidge is something that we probably just have to live with. Perhaps I will get a touchup stick, and in the future when I look at the chipped bits try and go all blurrey-eyed… much like I did when first got it. Might consider chips away in the future when I save up a few more. Any idea whether they can deal with chips that I have `temporarily’ filled with the touchup? I wont bother with calling them out for a quote just yet then, but if anyone can give a rough idea of price for jobs they’ve had done I’d appreciate it. |

I had booked my car in for some minor warranty paint work to be done when I noticed a stone chip on the roof that had started to rust.
When I took the car in I asked for the garage to quote how much for the stonechip, they called later to say £300 + VAT as the whole roof had to be sprayed. I declined, and said I would try ChipsAway or similar. 5 minutes later they called and said ChipsAway would charge £75 + VAT, so they would do it for the same cost. I agreed and they seem to have done a good job. Moral: Shop around, don't be afraid to say you have a better offer! Cheers, Terry |

I was looking at secondhand cars at one dealers and was so impressed with the apparent lack of stone chips I asked about it. The dealer gets Chipsaway to come in on a regular basis, he says typically £75 per car.

I think stone chips are going to be a fact of life with the Civic. I had my bonnet resprayed on warranty because it got so many chips in a short time. The dealer measured the paint thickness and found it to be under spec (1/2 the thickness of the rest of the car).
I have also got a HUGE chip on my rear offside panel .... they were covering the road in those chipping things, there were 20mph on every lamp post, and the b****y wagon that delivered the chippings was coming hurtling the other way at about 60mph. I heard a really load bang and picked up nice hole the paintwaork |

This really sucks
Here's an idea. Am interested if anyone thinks its daft. My impression is that chipsaway and other `paint fixie people' mix up the paint as per the code stamped on the passenger door (B92P-A I think for NHB) and then use their small airbrush. So, why not ask Halfords to mix up a spray can and learn how to do the job yourself. I realise that it's not a trivial job, but since it's going to happen a lot would surely be worth it? Anyone know a good place to read about spraying tiny areas? Aside: If NHB is B92P-A, then why does the touchup stick the dealer gave me say B92PHE ? Hmmmm |

Decided against attempting to spray - obviously!
Found out that dealers often give out touchup paint that isn't precisely the right colour. Apparently the last digit ('A' for the NHB) is the factory code, and it makes a difference. This goes against what my dealers parts dept told me "we can only order that one, the other letters on the end make no difference". A visit to halfords and looking at their paint database revealed lots of B92P paint codes with different factory codes on the end. Pratical upshot: the dealer paint didn't have much/any 'pearl' in it, but the custom mixed one looked just right |

on small chips i use the touch up kit, and fill the chip with paint, and before it dries i polish it down with a cutting compound, and do this until the chip is hard to see, i had to do this as the dealer who fitted my park sensors chiped the bumper, was not best pleased. they ordered me a new bumper, wrong shade of paint, as this bumper was flawless and my car has the orange peal option, like many of us do, i rejected this had my old bumper refitted, now with a few more marks on it, but it cost them a 5 year honda happiness pack and half my parking sensor money back, so not all bad in the end. must of cos the dealer well over £1000 in the end, tryin to sort there **** up out, serves them right.
