Making a lookalike
A recent sprog shaped addition to the family has given cause to a 5 door car, and so the wonderful Civic has been decided upon. A 12 hours test drive in a 2.2 EX sealed the deal, and so after a couple more months of saving we'll hopefully be joining that gang of 'cool' people. All was going well and I've been scouring this forum with excitement until a couple of weeks ago....
I saw a bright red CTR parked down the road, and I've seen it so many times now that I can safely say that I have fallen in love with it! Now red isn't usually my colour, and 1st choice for our new car is certainly going to be black, to match the 3 door car we're keeping. So, as another 3 door car is out of the question, my question is, how simple is it to make a 2.2EX into a CTR lookalike? Clearly the front grille would need changing along with the wheels. What kit does the CTR wear? Is it the image pack with a spoiler or something different? Those rear lights are different too arn't they? Is it lower? Can the 'CTR bits' be bought from a dealer? So many questions... |

It is easy to do, but not cheap
The Type R grill is around £200. The rear lamps come to about £300. Both of these are available from the dealer The front, rear and side skirts are of a different design on the 3 door Civic, and there is a bit of confusion as to whether they would fit a 5 door. The Honda Civic Image Pack supplies a meaner, but different from the Type R, looking front, rear and side skirts for £1500. Going for a black car would save you about £500 because you don't need to colour co-ordinate the black plastic trim. The 18" wheel upgrade costs about £850 if you order them with you new car, and about £1800 if ordered afterwards. Or you could try to persuade Honda to bring out a Sport Plus 5 door that looks like the Type R |

Foggy has given you a pretty detailed answer. There are plenty of Photos with the the 5 door models fitted with the image pack and various alloys in the gallery section. Ultimately the Type R is special in that it has so many bespoke bodyparts and touches, but it is possible if the moneys there!

I had the 3 door Type S for 6 weeks whilst waiting for my 5 door EX to arrive & found that it was just as easy if not easier to load young sproglet in & out the back seat as with the 5 door.
My only preference for the 5 door is that the doors are not so big so easier to use in cramped car parks. If you have sprog with you then use the wider "with sprog" bays, no worries. Get your CTR & enjoy!! (although I love my 2.2 EX!!) |

My CTR arrived 10 days after my daughter was born...
Just use a car seat that has an Iso fix base such as the maxi-cosi - easy to get in and out.... I can't understand why people assume you need a 5 door when you have a child? Also... if it looks like a type-r - your insurance company will insure it as a type r !! my wife can easily get the car seat in and out of this and her 3 door (bmw) mini... and she's not exactly heavily built ! Lilt'lun is 9 weeks old now, so we've been battling with her car seat and my 3 door focus for over 2 months now. We have one of those Mamas and Papas seats which has a base that stays in the car, so you just click the seat in and out. I can manage it fine, but the Mrs can't. Its just too heavy to hold whilst 'twisting' round the pillar.
When we tested the civic, the Mrs found getting the seat in and out much easier. Therefore I'm certain she won't let me get another 3 door. It goes totally against my argument for her letting me have a new car! Plus, I want to get a 5 door, as I've lived with a 3 door for 6 years now and all the bugbears I have with it will disappear with the 5. Sick of mates/family members, moaning about having to "climb into the back seat". |

Would have to agree - as part of my job I have a lot of contact with members of the public driving their cars - and when I saw my first new Civic last year couldnt believe it was a 5 door - the rear handle is perfectly placed you dont see it unless you know what to look for!

Maybe because it is far quicker to get a child out quickly if they say they are gonna throw up and because if you are involved in an accident it is easier for the emergency services to gain access to the back.
