Is my paint OK?

HI all,

I managed to get hold of a paint thinkness so I thought I'd see what kind of paint my spaceship had.

First the car - 06 Diesel EX 12K ish miles.

I checked about 10 -15 places on the bonnet and ranged from 110 - 130 Microns

the doors all seem to have around 90 - 100 Microns

And the roof had around 90 - 115 Microns. 90 was where the dealer replaced the windscreen trim and i think they have polished it a bit.

What do you guys think about the readings?
Im not sure what the recommended thicknesses should be.

Is the boot lid plastic? I felt like it was.

Oh I love talking about microns lol

The bonnet isnt plastic, the tailgate is. Are you using an elcometer?

Hi TC,

When is said the bootlid i meant the tailgate yes. I didnt notice that it was plastic till today really. I know that the bonnet isnt plastic.

I used a surface coating thickness meter that we have in our company . Borrowed it during lunch

Der - sorry I always mix them up lol always a pain when I am trying to put the shopping in the car

I had my car measured at the dealership and was told it measured between 55-74 microns, HUK say that the measurements were incorrect and the car measures an average of 88.8 - so yours is good if the equipment is accurate.

I would have thought that you just need a friendly paint shop, rather than hiring one properly:

According to HUK they are not 100% reliable, there are many different types available at different prices.

The more expensive the better the result. The idea is to measure each panel in about 20 places and take an average reading per panel.

Ah you see I have learn't alot about car paint int he last year

I see your readings above - HUk would say that they fall within their standard as their standard believe it or not starts at 70!!!!!!!

I have many areas of my car that are in the 70s and HUK say that it is acceptable to give an average reading for the entire car as a whole which is a load of b*****ks !!

Oh and the reason why I said that some elcometers are not accurate is because I had my car checked at a dealership and some of the readings were as low as 55 but HUK told me to disregard those as the equipment was unreliable - again I say a load of b*****cks!!!
