Removing Bird Droppings

Any recommendations for removing bird droppings,ie what products to use, i live quite far inland but we have a problem with seagulls and a large quantity at that, loacal takeaways, chinese and chip shops, also residents dont help with throwing their meal scraps out in their gardens, so we have some skittery birds out there, soon after washing the car it happens splat, who said it is lucky being hit by bird poo

Wet it with a mist spray of water an allow it to soak, then mop it up. I use Meguiar's Quick Detailer for birdshit. This does the trick. Imperative that you leave it to soak though, or you will just end up with swirl marks where you wiped it off. If it is particularly resistant, use a detailing clay on the remains. Soon gets it off.

Good tip

I remember one 'expert' reckoning that you soak a cloth with warm water to place over the area once it has been soaked.

The idea being that it will partially disolve it and prevent scratching.

Do make sure that whatever you use to take it off that the 'poo' is wet through.

Bird poo often has seeds and grit 'n stuff in it and if it hasn't been moistened enough you are likely to get them there scratches left to mark the spot!

Just be careful.

That finish has got to last a long time!

I keep some Meguiars Quik Detailer and a cloth in the car for this very purpose. Some BP is really nasty and can eat through the clear coat so clean it off as soon as you can.

I made the mistake of not soaking properly first - ended up with a nice swirly scratch just above one of the passenger doors - bloody birds!!

Same practice. Just make sure that any dried remains are well soaked. If you can rinse it off with a hose pipe post soaking, all the better.

I use the Supagard Bird Lime Remover that came with the car & I have to say that it works pretty well - it rehydrates the droppings making them easier to remove.

However, my own personal quick tip is to very gently use a soaked bit of kitchen roll (warm water) first thing in the morning - it usually comes off easily. I tend to use the Supagard stuff if the droppings look particularly corrosive & I daren't leave it until the morning. Watch out because it will be blackberry season soon - very acidic, bright purple droppings!

Turtle Wax tar & bug remover spray is excellent for tree sap. (see another thread on the subject).

I use Fenwicks Caravan Cleaner - its the dogs doodaas for such jobs, it'll shift just about anything, and it gets all the crap off alloy wheels in a jiffy! I also use thier Bobby Dazzler to rinse car off after washing with FCC, slosh it on and leave it - no marks!! good-luck, john07

Birds eat grit to aid their digestion and this passes through them and into what ends up on your car. Make sure you thoroughly soak the offending spot and rinse off, rather than rubbing off. I usually leave a wet tissue on the spot for several minutes whilst I carry on cleaning elsewhere on the car; then rinse off and leather. Smaller spots can be wiped off with a wet tissue after a soak but never try to rub the spot away if it still feels stuck to the paint.

Bird spots are very acidic and will etch into the paintwork if not removed promptly.

It's always a good idea to keep a packet of 'baby wipes' in the Space Ship.

It helps get rid of the BP quite efficiently.

......and if you're unfortunate enough to own a oil burning Space Ship you can use those wipes for getting your hands clean after you've filled up!

For the more stubborn stuff try megs quick detailer and clay bar. Its designed to remove all sorts such as tree sap, tar etc and does the trick nicely on bird dropping residue

Just had one BP, and not more than 4 hours after washing the car I noticed it on my right door top. Immediately rinsed it, but the bird must have dropped a good concentrate of acid...
The paintjob had wrinkles and though I rubbed with a scratch remover paste, I now have a trace that is noticed when viewed at an angle...
Need not stay overnight to make more than enough damage, so wipe it off as soon as you can...

Don't be silly, Charles; the bird will be well away before you even get the glovebox open...
