How do I sort out a rusty chip?

I've just found a chip near the boot a few mm in diameter, which has gone rusty ...I will have to get some touch up paint from my local dealer, but how do I get rid of the rust first. What is the best way to ensure it's all gone before I apply primer and then the paint?

It's been raining pretty much every day, so I'm not sure when I will be able to sort the chip out (I haven't got use of a garage)...so, is there anything I can do in the interim to stop further damage from the rust?

Thanks

I would suggest a coating of Hammerite KURUST. It converts rusty metal to a clean surface in 15 minutes, then cover with touch-in paint to suit.

Cheers allan40alt...are you saying that if I use Kurust, I won't need to use primer? Can I get this stuff from any good diy store?

No primer or undercoat required.

The small 'touch-in' bottle I have is a bit old now, but the instructions say:

'Ensure the surface is clean and free from loose rust etc. Apply directly onto the rusty area. Watch whilst the KURUST reacts with the rust and turns blue/black (if the area does not change colour then re-apply within 1 hour). Apply topcoat after 3 hours, virtually all topcoats are suitable'.

I got mine from Halfords some years ago. Pleased to say I haven't needed it on my Civic.

Good luck.
