I was just about to go and buy some rain-x and then remembered I had bought some stuff from the Motor show about 5 years ago - http://www.rainracer.com/pb/index.htm its called rain racer, was really easy to apply and has apparantly been used in commercial marine applications for years.

Will let you know how good when it rains but claims you don't need wipers??

We shouldn't have to wait too long to find out how good/bad it is then

I was driving in rain the other day, and didn't need the wipers where I would have before putting the rainx on. It wasnt heavy rain but it was enough for the wipers to be on.

Finally rained whilst out in the car and no wipers needed at all.

On the Motorway and every other car had full speed by all the rain on my windows was just beading off!!

I reccomend - not as good when no strong air flow but rear window was spot on also, all windows stay clean also!

I have applied that stuff 3 times without any success.

The rain beads, yes, but stays on the rear screen.

I wanna wiper!!!

Maybe I'm putting it on inside out!!!

Charles, you need to get out of those 20mph zones and give it some welly, get those aerodynamics working and it will fall off, in other words put your foot down

Surely there is less friction when using wipers on wet glass, as opposed to dry glass? At least I've noticed that they 'drag' a lot more if I turn them on accidentally when dry.

Rain-X would just make the glass "permanently wet" in this sense, no? It's probably a bit more slippery than water, but I don't know if the difference is that much, really.

Yes...
But I think it's a lot more slippery - enough difference that water runs off instead of just sitting there looking all smug

It might just be an urban myth - but I'd rather not find out the hard way by coughing up for the price of a new wiper motor

The Rain-X never seemed to take to the lower half very well, but then its already a highly advanced hydrophobic spaceage elastomer. Also, in the instructions on the excerpt above it says apply with a damp cloth, don't remember reading that on my bottle, been usig a dry paper towel thing, maybe thats the reason it is good but not great.

Went to costco and bought rain-x for hubby's car. He'll probably "report" his findings as it's forecasted rain next week.

it's 500 ml + foaming glass cleaner ( 300ml ) - £ 4.99 + vat

In the rain again on the Motorway and no wipers - feels weird seeing everyone on full wack and you just cruise along!!

Even the Honda technicians has their grubby fingers in the drops at the edge of the screen when it went in today for the shocks.

I have always used a damp cloth, waited till it mists then wipe off with a dry cloth. Step 2, spray a misting of water over the screen and polish off with another dry cloth.

This method seems to work ok.

Yep,, That is what I do...... as per the instructions on the back of the bottle - Works a treat, and is a real plus when used on a motorcycle helmet visor.

Has anyone used Rain-X on the front windscreen on cars fitted with automatic wipers? I just thought that if it is effective in dispersing water droplets as claimed, then there would be no water droplets left for the auto wipers to detect and the wipers would not come on. In reality does this happen and do the auto wipers still come on.

I put it on my current car - Golf. I simply disable the auto-wipe function (switch it off). As the droplets run up the screen, then the wiper sensor would cause a swipe.
