Hi
Just been to fast festival and purchased a clay cloth to try for first time.
Questions I have are - has anybody used one ? Are they better or worse then clay bar?
I've just got knew because I'm a beginner in the detailing world.
I also got some poor boys polish and carnauba wax normal run of the mill.
Excited to try it all out !
Yes i have used both over the years, currently use a clay mitt as it speeds up the claying process compared to using pieces of bar.
(remember to detar, maybe deironise the paint before claying )They both have there good points. Just use plenty of shampoo/water mix as you clay lube making sure the paint surface is well wet. Nice straight lines when claying with very light pressure, just glide over the surface, dont rub. Do an panel at a time and rinse the mitt each time in a clean bucket. Once clayed, rinse and dry the car in readiness for your polishing stage.:wink3:
What product do I use for detar? The guy said to me to shampoo my car then spray clay lube and use clay cloth so do I not rinse the car aftrr shampoo or shall go straight from shampoo to claying ?
just used clay mitt on sons ibiza fr . good bit of kit mitt.wanner put me on to them not used clay bar since .like wanye says plenty of lub not to much pressure . i used autoglym tar remover for de tar . prob better products but seems to do the job.cheers mark.
You should only need to clay a car twice a year max tbh. As long as its rinsed off thoroughly and stored in a zip bag or something then it should last a while. As long as the rubbery texture has not degraded or worn then continue to use it. Even if you feel it is worn then dont throw it away, use it on your glass to remove any contaminents and get a new one for paint
Should do those a few times over easily. As i mentioned to the op, get as much contamination from the paintwork as possible ie tar spots, fallout, bugs, etc etc before you clay.:wink3:
I use Farecla Mitts a lot on Clients' cars
They are excellent and typically last a very long time
Ive probably done 6 to 8 cars with each one
They do have their limitations however
On high contamination paintwork, its a MUST to use some tar remover and iron out product prior to using
Bilt Hamber Clay is very good too for higher contamination
As already said....Use plenty of lubrication and dont apply too much pressure
As you go you will hear the contamination being removed...Its quite satisfying TBH
Good luck
Chris
And yes i'll have to do Iron out and tar as i've read that before claying - I think the Mitt will be fine for me as i'll probably be lazy and do it once a year - but as it's a new car to me want to do it this year before winter get it sealed and waxed
BTW if i've done touch up paint work etc how long should i wait before doing a claying etc - a few week or longer ? I know people will say should have done before i touched up but i did clean area well and used rubbing alcohol - and i've a novice so to me detailing before was wash car dry with leather jobs a good one
