Mine has just developed the same problem, but I'm nowhere near handy enough to start pulling bits off and soldering.
Hopefully I'll just grin & bear it for now until it gets too annoying.

Any chance of somebody posting a quick guide showing how to get to the display/ replace it? Mine seems to be going funny in my type S and if it's an easy fix, I'll have a go.

Just an update, for those of you who have the same issue and don't want to buy a new unit at ÂŁ300+ - Take it out and carefully solder every point to the board. It's time consuming but as long as you apply a little solder to each point, this will solve the problem. Mine hasn't played up since I did it a month or so ago!

I had this problem a while back and ended up buying 2 replacement HU's on ebay by accident. problem wasn't with the display but with the HU itself, given it's a Sat Nav model then I wantesd to keep the stock HU.

Always meant to sell the other but it's still in the loft!

Took me about an hour in total to get the dash apart, remove, replace and put back together. Been fine ever since.

Yes you need to take out the speedometer, there is no way around it.

Also, you're really lazy... search function works rather well on civinfo, here are your instructions:

PS. It CAN get tricky to take out the radio/ac display. The simple trick is to either pull evenly on both sides (never works), or slide a small trim tool, preferably curved, into the corner that gets stuck and GENTLY pry as you pull. Be very very careful when doing this, you can damage the clear plastic.

tbh, you just have to yank the thing out. The way I did it was first take the front casing of the speedometer off, after removing the top cover. If you look at if through the windscreen, there's a clip you need to pull upwards to get it off. Lift that up and pull forward, then the speedo will just need to be pulled out, as it's sort of suspended by one of those stupid plastic clips at the back.

That's the easiest way to get the speedo off to expose the clip and screw on the ac display. The rest is carefully, but firmly, pulling on the display, whilst using a thin flat head screw driver to pry the clip out behind the overlap on the left side (presuming you're driving a right hand drive car).

It's tricky and it feels as if it'll break, but after half an hour of getting no-where, I found the only way to get it out was to use a bit of force!
