Mount your satnav on the dash

Hi All,

I was fed up of mounting my satnav on the windscreen and the civic dash is perfect for the satnav to sit out of the way and look neat and tidy.

First i just used some sticky velcro simply on the base of the satnav to attach direct to the dash but this wobbled a fair bit when cornering.

I found some L-shaped plastic that i cut to shape, this meant that i could put the velcro on the base and rear of the satnav which gives a much better hold. The plastic stand is then simply stuck to the dash with double sided tape.

Although the stand is a little crude (may make a mk2 version at some point) it is almost completely hidden by the satnav while in the car and the curve of the dash hides it from the outside.

So far it hasnt budged, even when cornering hard, accelerating and braking.

Will post pics when i get a chance.

Next up is somewhere for the snooper to go!

Az.

If you have a Garmin Satnav, then you can get a Bean bag mount that sits securely on the dash and leaves no marks at all. A very neat solution.

I think with a portable SAT NAV system, one has to remove all signs/clues of having one in the car, on leaving it, otherwise you run the risk of returning to your car and finding a window smashed. Thieves have sussed out you have such a system. Having said that there are parts in the North West I wouldn't dream of taking my car and it does not even have any Sat Nav system.

Luckily on the security front i live in a low risk area in the countryside and where i work has its own car park so theres no problem with leaving the satnav on the dash most of the time!
I can put the satnav away and as ive made the mount for it then no-one else would know wot its for for sure (could be for mobile phone, etc).
The beanbag idea sounds good though though my prototype seems to be doing the job well so far.

I guess you have to choose. A Satnav mounted in the car is more secure but means you can't plug it into the internet to get the latest updates and speed camera info (this is the main use for my Satnav).

A beanbag mount (or equivalent) helps go someway towards addressing the security issue. I can put the unit, mount and cables in the glove box, leaving no visible trace of a Satnav in the car.

I have a Garmin i3 which is small enough to fit in my pocket. Usually I mount it to the windscreen via a suction bracket but it can be mounted to the dash. As said above this can give the thief’s a clue to there being a SatNav system in the car. I agree that the civics dash is the most sat nave friendly if seen. The beanbag sounds like a great idea.

I use this "gadget":

04 b Metacrilato Navegador.JPG

It's a Methacrylate circle sticked to the dashboard, where I can place tomtom's suction pad, avoiding spots on the windscreen...

Can you see it?

Any chance of a picture, sooner rather than later as I need to get something sorted.

The Garmin Bean Bag looks like a great idea I am amazed that a third party has not brought something out?

Same here, but at £1400 it is a bit expensive to mount it this way!

See you!
Where do you get these - I want one for mine - the disk that came with my Garmin keeps coming unstuck - this looks a lot better.

Apparently the newer Sat Navs with Bluetooth broadcast themselves when left on standby so any low life with the right equipment knows its there even if they can't see it.
I think this applies to laptops as well
