Not sure what you mean by 'new' sat nav as it's the same system in all the 5dr and 3dr Civics, unless you mean the latest disk.

IMO I think the Sat Nav is very good, I have a Tom Tom alot which I used alot prior to getting the Civic. At first it to a while to get used to the Honda system and I missed some of the Tomtoms features like 3D view, programmable POI's and touch screen, but now I find the Honda sat nav equally as good in terms of routing and the TMC is excellent. The POI' are crap though!

Have a search of the forum for other peoples opinions and have look at the wiki for more info about the functions.

You can also do some mods to the system if your that way inclined, like DIY back up camera/video in and custom start up screens.

It's made by Alpine but the wiki here will probably be your best source of info.

Talking EX Sat Nav

Got my EX two weeks ago so could well be the same system(software) you will receive.
Personally, having used Tom Tom and Garmin previously I find the Honda version very good. The menus are intuitive and once you have found your way around, routing and re-routing are a breeze.
I agree with previous comments re:crap POIs, and one other negative comment is the mapping is out of date-one local by-pass that opened 2 years ago does not exist, which is a little annoying although the system is set up in such a way that this doesn't prove to be too much of a problem.

On a very positive note, I recently took a 450 round trip using motorways/A/B roads and the system coped well with good directions - although I need to find a function that avoids city centres !

Another fun, involving item is the voice control - I use it to change scale without taking eyes off the road, and if you have kids, the voice prompt is great when you get the question 'are we there yet' or 'how far is it' - just tell the kids to ask the car ! Keeps 'em busy for a couple of minutes anyhow !

Are you able to update the SATNAV even when it is built in?

SAT NAV Update

Yes - software/mapping update via DVD in glove box - apparently there should be an annual update, but obviously not with my 'missing' by-pass.

I am also led to believe that Honda will charge you approx £200 for the updated DVD !!

In my opinion the built in Satnav is great.

Very practical (compared to stand alone unit), easy to use and access with TMC and everything.

I think you will find update maps to all devices being expensive.

And, as everyone else is saying, the Wiki is your friend when looking for information.
