The amount of Honda bad publicity over these Sat Nav DVDs is incredible. I do not understand why they don't offer upgrades free of charge for the three years the car is under warrenty. Just a nominal charge for the DVDs themselves such as £20 would cover their manufacturing costs.

They waste a fortune on weak advertising and their website whereas this would be a real selling story. If I was a dealer I would offer at least one free upgrade over the 3 years. For just £200 what a cheap way to sell more cars than your competitors!

For £200 you could get a really good TomTom - which accepts safety cameras with ease.

TomTom only charge about £30 for new maps and they sell quite well I would imagine.

I suppose with new DVD's Honda, TrafficMaster, Alpine and presumably some others are looking for a return.

I reckon they would sell more than 4 times the amount at £50 than they are going to sell at say £200 so in the end they could be losing out on legitimate version sales to ebay.

Really don't get why dealers still charge the earth for the updates, they have afterall already raped you of 1200 quid for having it in the car in the first place.

Updates inside warranty should be free, then after that they can charge the 200 quid. But hey!

I guess it grounds down to the licence fee they pay to alpine and/or navtec for each new release. I guess there are two options :
- Honda pays big money to alpine and/or navtec for releasing the upgrade, it them gets a global licence and can sell the upgrade at low cost, hoping volume of sales will cover the cost (like TomTom for ex.).
- Honday pays minimum to alpine and/or navtec. The end user pays the full licence fee (better suited if satnav system is more "confidential").

My former satnav was a Becker (first gen with TMC, not even graphical), the upgrade was 450€ ! (2CDs, Europe East+West)

That doesn't mean I disagree with you : this is way too expensive, especially since I would have to upgrade from day one (as posted before, I got the car 4 days ago and it comes with v3.06)

It isn't just a Honda thing, Subaru wanted £350 for the upgrade disc for the Legacy DVD Satnav

And the prize goes to JJ - as I understand it, the prices are due to licensing regs not greed but yes on a personal note, i agree it is somewhat expensive.

Garmin use the same map data as the Honda DVD, and charge between £47 and £60 for the DVD upgrade. Tomtom / Teleatlas charge £40 for the UK and £60 for the whole of Europe.

I'm sure most people here would agree that £60 would be a fair price, given the market.

Totally agree and this is why ebay does so well.

I would be straight down the dealers at £60.

Trouble is a few "naughty" sellers are obviously selling backup copies on Ebay noticed another couple using the same ad style popping up, and people are paying this sort of money for a copy !!

I'd be quite annoyed if I paid that much for counterfeit goods, even if they may well work.

I got Europe-West only from a guy in Germany and got it for £110 (it's an original) which is still too much but a lot better than the Honda price. Anyway I'm going to sell my v3.05 on and charge the difference to my work anyway (company car )

Sorry if this has already been covered (which it probably has) but....

I've established to wait for 3.23 (I'm on 3.05) I just wondered about whether this software also affects the audio controls etc? Has that been updated too??

Finally, best place to buy the 3.23 when it's available? I am not giving my local dealer £200 for what amounts to nothing more than an updated disc ...

Cheers

Someone is going to be disappointed if they pay £85 for a bugged version.

Why are they? I paid £110 for a "bugged version" and it's hardly a noticeable bug. Although at least mine is an official version as that looks a copy at that price.

TMC works fine under 3.22, all I have lost are the traffic flow lines which I never used anyway as I just want to miss the traffic all together. I have yet to find any other bug and the new routing engine is 100% better.

I would say if you aren't bothered about the TMC traffic flow lines then look at 3.22 as a chance to get your update a lot cheaper as it will be the same maps and I'm sure there will be lots of the 3.22 disks floating about.

Hi

The bug is that the firmware on the SatNav DVD version 3.22 (firmware version 2.01) is preventing the traffic flow lines. If your happy to not have that info then fine.

I was running the 3.22 last Friday and the absence of the red lines put me into a jam that I would have avoided having had the flow info. The reason was that the initial warning Triangle at the start of the first jam was off the screen and with no lines the road looked clear.

Today I am running the 3.23 (firmware version 2.02) and I am expecting the lines to appear later, which they should do because it's Friday (Poets Day).

If I had purchased the 3.22 from a dealer I would be expecting a free upgrade under the circumstances.
