Yes it happens, mainly when interference with nearby frequencies occurs or in difficult environments (like cramped parking lots) - try a few times before trying to open with the key, I've always tried to re-lock then unlock by remote, successfully until now

I remember seeing Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear one night getting a Mercedes key fob to become more powerful by holding it against his head while pressing the button.
I have done it myself a few times, it really works and is a good laugh watching all the strange looks in the Tesco car park.

Yep - I have this problem also. Has happened twice in my front garden, and once or twice in a car park. Quite embarassing! Usually I just walk around the car in circles pointing the key fob every which way - must looke quite silly! If all else fails I use the key - then works fine the next time.

As civicfan says, it sounds like a trip to the dealers. That's what they are there for allegedly!!

Have you tried changing the battery inside the key fob?

its the same problem with the spare key, and it doesnt matter how i hold the key, close by or far away...
if it fails i must first open the doors manually and then things are ok.
I havent tried the head solution but i dont think it will work, i think it has something to do within the car itself.

Today it happened again!
Pressed the button, diode on key lit red, nothing happened.
Opened door with key, then tried the remote again. Now it worked....
Washed the car yesterday, has been snow and freezing during night.

I occasionally have a problem like this when I bring the wife's Mini to work. Remote works fine at home (and everywhere else), but seems to struggle when parked outside our offices. The only thing I can put it down to is the wireless network in our office causing some sort of interference.

If you're having problems in more than one location though, it would seem quite unlikely to be interference.

Could it have been the frost that seized up your locking mech?

By using the key directly your torque would probably be greater than the little solenoids.

"I'll give you a difinite maybe!"

I get the same problem, look for large Air condition units on the side of buildings they can affect meters off their current location

Yes, think so. I was a bit puzzled that the indicator lights didn't flash, but this is maybe triggered by the unlocking of the dorrs, so when they freeze nooothing happens .
Anyway I could unlock the door with my key - so it wasn't too bad.

We've had a h*** of a lot of freezeing thawing cycles this winter (one per day!), and until now I've never had any problems getting into the civic!
Which make it the best car I've owned so far in this respect. Also.
