I do realise that the emissions are directly affected by the rate that the engine warms up but deliberately forcing the engine to work harder to achieve it seems a negative way of doing it.
It turns out that this rather odd auto-defrost is a rather brilliant eco device. The diesel is only efficient when it's hot, but it's so efficient that sometimes it may struggle to get hot. It could spend ages running luke warm and all that time using more fuel than it needs to, just for the sake of a short load to get it warm.

Notice how the heater load only comes on when it's cold outside and the engine is cold - just the conditions you need to warm the engine up quicker, not the windscreen.

Very clever.

Yes Sep 06 2.2 SE

I did not realise it did the mirrors as well, I have been pressing the button to clear the mirrors even though the rear window is clearing.

My button can now remain finger print free!!!!

I bet they only did this to get the emissions down as the urban cycle includes start from cold.

heated window

I Have already voted yes earlier. i would like to add that after being parked at asda the other day, on setting off the windows had misted over due to the rain, my rear window started to de-mist even though i had not turned it on, i think that maybe they are always on.

as long as the conditions meet the criteria mentioned above (cold engine, cold outside) then they will come on

What you need to check (if you are concerned) is if they are still on (without you having pressed the button) more than 45 mins later.
touching the wing mirror should tell you, as they get noticeably warm when on

either that, or wait until the weather changes for the warmer, and check then

I think the assumption is that the 'feature' is only on CTDi's
