If the idea of the "Auto On" is to speed up engine warm up by making it work harder with an extra electrical load, why didn't Honda switch in the ceramic heater in the ventiation system instead. Then my feet would get warmer quicker!
Or they could have added an electric heater to the engine cooling circuit. Both of these seem better than heating a bit of glass at the back of the car for 40 mins |

Auto heater
Nice reply. My wife's Puma gets the interior air warm far more quickly so that may be because power is not going to the rear windscreen
Civic 2.2 diesel SE. Not very good with these gissmos and smileys but here is my first attempt |

Yes, due to the efficancy percentage of the fuel, a diesel will generate less heat. |

To be really concise.... or may be sad..
1; Diesel fuel has more energy per litre than petrol (this is where most of the extra mpg comes from) 2; Diesel engines run at about the same temperature as petrols, but thet use the fuel more efficiently ie more of the energy in the fuel is converted in to motion and less in to heat (this is where the rest of the extra mpg comes from) 3; diesel engines are made heavier and strong than petrol engine to cope with the extra loads caused by the massive compression ratios This means as a diesel is warming up there is less waste heat being dumped in to the cooling water and there is more metal to warm up as well. This means my feet are cold but my wallet is a bit fuller |

What is the effect of the heating?
The efficiency of the diesel engine is ca 40%(?), meaning that ca 60% of the combusted diesel goes to heating of the engine. Which again should imply that for each watt of rear window heating, the engine will produce 1,5 watt of internal heat. |

Mine definately doesn't come on - Jan 2007 2.2 Type S.
However, i've had a thought. I never have the temp on Auto - i manually set the temp and the fan speed myself. Could it be that it only comes on when Auto is turned on? Edit: Just read that when it's on the light on the button doesn't come on. In that case, it probably does do it, just I don't know about it. Last edited by Dawson; 1st April 2008 at 19:25. |
