Right then....

As planned, the missus got her 3G this morning, and is nagging quite alot as, in the interest of science and review, I haven't really let her get a look in yet!!

Firstly, I can't do a straight comparison yet as the V2.0 firmware is not yet available for my original iPhone due to it only being released in the US at 8am, and with us being 7 hours behind, it won't be available until later today...

But anyway....first impressions are that....and here it comes.....the 3G is NO faster than the original iPhone when using its apps... furthermore, it's glossy coating IS going to scratch quite badly if not covered sufficiently, which is why we've just ordered a Revo iSkin for it, like I have on mine...

One thing i will say is that the Apps Store (available through iTunes) is the coolest thing I've ever seen - and we've already downloaded 2 Apps for Nicola's 3G iPhone - Monkeyball and an app called Shazam...

Monkeyball is truly amazing, and I genuinely think that the likes of Nintendo DS have got something to worry about now...why would you pay £20 for a game for the DS, when you could pay £6 for a game when the graphics are MORE than on a par.....

With Shazam the idea is that if theres a song playing (radio, cd, whatever) you hold your phone up to the speaker, and it recognises the tune, gives you all the info for it, and even gives links to the iTunes Store for purchasing if you wish....I thrown some very obscure tunes at it, and I just ain't been able to fool it yet!!! And whats more....the App is FREE!!!

When the update for mine is available and set up, I'll do a straight compare with photos etc....

i had a play with one before the release, but i was unable to find the built in gps receiver, and the 3g is pants. if you have the original then stick with it, upgrade the firmware and save your money. it still cannot send photos etc via bluetooth which is one of the reasons i got ride of mine and have got the n95 8gb which is mile better then the 1st n95, so dont confuse the two.

Still missing a vital feature for me...

iPhone is still missing one vital feature for me - the ability to link up with my laptop and dial up to the internet via 3G (like those mobile broadband things from 3)

Lack of MMS also annoys me as I've got a 6 week old son and my wife sends me pictures of him when I'm working away.

No iPhone for me unless they change those two things!

That's something - I also take pictures of the little menace and send him to his grandad, but that's not too vital.

Maybe it's one down and one to go. However, I don't think that they'll change the 'use as a modem' thing any time soon!

Is anyone else loving the App Store, it has given my gen1 iPhone a new lease of life, so far i've got the following apps:

  • Cro-Mag Rally, £5.99, excellent game along the lines of Mario Kart, superb graphics, very smooth, once you get used to steering with the iphone its a blast - highly recommended
  • Shanghai Mahjong, £2.99, loads of puzzles, future upgrades will have different tiles (star trek/movie titles etc) if you like mahjong you will love this app - recommended
  • Shazam, Free for a limited period, brilliant app, identify any music track by holding the iphone microphone near the source and letting shazam 'listen' for a few seconds. Once shazam has identified the track it gives you artist/album details, links to buy the track on itunes and youtube videos etc - highly recommended
  • PhoneSaber, Free, turns your iphone into a lightsaber - totally pointless but fun and free - recommended.

Anyone else got any apps they want to let us know about or recommend?

No, I currently use an O2 XDA hacked to run Windows Mobile 6.1 (brilliant phone!)

I elected to wait for the 3G version (i'm glad I did) But won't be in the market for one until the end of the year. Hopefully they will have ironed out any bugs (if there are any) and have the white one more readily available by then!

Now would be a good time to get a iPod car kit I think in anticipation!

Can't agree more with Shazam mate - absolutely awesome app! I've tried to fool it so many times, and it just gets it right every time!!! Even with cover versions....how does it do that!?! There was a piece of music playing on Top Gear last night whilst Clarkson was testing the Alfa 8C - there was only about 6 secs of uninterupted music before jezza started talking over it....yet shazam found it!!! ('Aria' by Lisa Gerrard from Layer Cake if any ones interested!)

Monkey Ball is also superb - I genuinely think that the likes of the Nintendo DS have got a potential big problem with the power of the iphone and the price of it's downloadable games....The game is a bit sensitive to start with, but you soon get used to it...it's just awesome!

My brother highly recommends the Tetris game he's put on his.
