James May put it brilliantly in his sum up of the civic when it came out....

(Talking about the starter button) 'If you come out of a Little Chef on a wet Wednesday afternoon on your way to a marketing conference, that could be enough to make you think - 'no I won't kill myself''

YouTube - honda civic topgear

Sorry the audio sync goes a little astray.

The boiled sweet was the Hazard Warning Switch.

The tag line for this thread should be:

If you want boring design, there are plenty of cars out there for you. Don't slag off Honda for daring to be different.

But with this button:

i) I can find it straight away after the foreplay of turning on the ignition!

ii) I can get it going with just one gentle push!

iii) The pleasure factor last a lot longer!...although; let me think about that!

I do remember my dealer telling me that when the car is in gear and u press the button without clutching, it wouldnt start, havent tried it though but apparently as i've just read, he lied to me

edit: or the poor man had no idea what he was talking about, lol
The manual states to press the clutch pedal down before starting. I always wait a couple of seconds for the lights of go out before starting the car.

I stalled the car today and noticed that the system check symbol comes up and indicated a problem with the battery! It should really say 'Muppet give it more gas!' instead! lol

The quote 'like a boiled sweet' while delivered by May regarding the Hazard Switch is actually a comment from the designer of the switch. It's a perfect match to a 'Strepsils Original'.

The start switch is a little more be-jeweled. A friend of mine had the previous CTR and when the S2000 came out with a Start Switch he bought the switch and fitted it in place of the Lighter. It had the advantage of being on the left side so he could turn the key with the right to second stop and press the button with his left. He openly admits it's a posers gimick just like ours (especially as he could still start the car with the key) and the left side mounting increased the pose value as the ladies could see the operation when he picked them up!!!

Well in the rest of Europe (i.e. not UK) we use the key in our right hand and the Start button is on the left, so I guess it's easier than having to turn the key and then use the same hand to press the button. No, hang on, I need to have one hand on the steering wheel when I start the car, so I turn the key with my right hand, then grab the wheel, then press the start button with my left hand! Dammit! Too many movements! Where the hell is keyless ignition?

ps. Only going by the many test drives and my memory, won't get my paws on my own until Friday

Get the sequence right and you've got aquick start then.

RH Key
LH Button
RH Handbrake
LH Steering wheel
RF Gas.

See - if you had to start with the key your had would not be free to release the brake while you start the car - thus it's not a gimick after all it was just designed for LHD cars.

After reading the many posts about handbrakes, I thought you didn't need them in Civics.
